Catacombs are huge rocky tunnels, which underground territory estimates between one quarter and one half of the world. Thin upper caves ceilings form Decaying grounds between the Am and Au sectors. Dug for Amphimed by a group of demomen, this place isn't suitable for safe walkies nor on or in it because of a common, very demoman reason. Soon happened landslide blocked might-be-inhumans inside for better times, until they, many thanks to Shelldem, did the way out at last.
Before this it was a quite cool, but a nice sort of place with a plenty of groundwater and even with the world's only river flowing through there, further to the Canyon, solid rock walls of lower levels guaranteed the ceilings won't fall on your head - it could be a pretty good life, if only it wasn't so dark and barren.
Amphimed stopped the team building to make it out alive, slowly driving insane of loneliness and hunger he managed to somehow breed dimly glowing algae, but his team and he himself were unfinished. Feeling responsible for the fail, he fell into the deepest of his dark moments. Trying to eliminate himself from the world history and avoid the respawn, he froze himself into ice.
Since this, the Catacombs is a slightly lighter, but a hellishly cold unfriendly place with not any less unfriendly Fritz - still living there, and not frozen anymore.
