Description Finally, the first of the photos from the Tudor shoot!

This is the gown that Elizabeth I wore in the 1546 portrait of her. I made the entire outfit, which consists of a full kirtle (gold) with boning, over gown of red brocade, Tudor style French Hood, and a hoop skirt (the only thing I didn't make). I also hand beaded all of the trim (both on the gown and French hood), matching it to the origional portrait.

The pendant necklace and brooch were custom made by the lovely Sapphire & Sage ([link] ).

Photography by the Image Gallery.

Costume made and modeled by me.

I found this through a Google image search for "Tudor gown" and had to log in here (for the first time in about a year) to say "wow." You're really talented, as an illustrator, designer and seamstress, and you look lovely in this too.

This is a really gorgeous version of one of my favourite gowns of all time! I've always loved the colour combination used, and you picked some lovely fabrics that really show it off. The beading on the gown and hood look amazing too.

I really respect your aim to include the small details, it's always those that make a costume look it's best, and you've certainly achieved that with this one.

You look so much like the Princess Elizabeth, The gown is one of the most beautiful I have seen in ages.
My compliments.
Though I must ask how did you make the gown and hood?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Reine-Haru In reply to DeadDahlia [2009-03-08 14:07:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you The gown took about 150 hours to make and around $350 in supply costs. I found a pattern for the Tudor style French hood online and then constructed it using 3 layers of buckram edged in millinery wire. I had never made a hood or hat before ^_^;

If you have any other specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them

This is FABULOUS. I'm actually basing my next Renaissance Faire outfit on this same portrait!

Just a question: may I ask where you bought the farthingale? I can't seem to find any that are even slightly historically correct, and I fear I'm going to have to make that too.. I'd rather not! I'd appreciate if I could find a place that makes them for a reasonable price(:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Reine-Haru In reply to thenamespanic [2009-02-06 03:38:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I bought my farthingale at Mary Jo's ([link] ). They're also not too terribly hard to make. For instance, you can buy the hoop boning (which is GREAT in corsets) here: [link]

Also, I'm trying to sell this costume (I really need the money). So, if you're interested in purchasing it, I'm including all the jewelry, farthingale, etc. and I'll make you a good deal.

Oh, I would love to have that outfit, but I'm also short on money - and I prefer to make my dresses myself(: It's my hobby. It's an amazing garment, though, I'm so surprised that somebody hasn't already purchased it!

I hear you, I've been short on money too and have been trying to find cheaper ways to get accessories and cloth for my new costumes ^_^;

Thanks! The placard is attached on one side and is closed with hooks and eyes on the other.

Of course. I made sure to stay as historically accurate as possible, even in the lacing style

The amount of effort you put into this is amazing! The costume itself turned out very nice, and it's cool that you worked to put in the details

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Reine-Haru In reply to Ryva [2008-08-24 23:37:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks. I have had to go back and revise/fix sooo much stuff on this costume and every time I do I say "Ugh, I'm so sick of seeing this pop back up in my sewing room >.>;" Finally though, it's done, and I'm happy with it.

I really wanted to keep all the small details that the portrait had, because I've seen so many historical reproduction costumes etc. that get the main points, but ignore all the cool little stuff (ignore it because it's rather a pain in the backside to add on).
