This is awesome! Only six hours? The fox looks realistic enough as does the fur with the details.

With more time I'd get into finer detailed fur work. I have the habit of getting too absorbed with detail work that I can mess up anatomy, lighting, and unifying the whole piece, so working fast like this helps remind me to relax and just have fun. The only reason I can do this so fast is because wildlife art and namely canines were my original subject so I can paint them much faster than other subjects lol.

I still find it amazing how much is possible in just a few hours. I need several hours for a simple line art drawing. Well, this will get faster soon, I guess.

I wouldn't worry about trying to work faster. Many artists take months or even years to complete one piece while others can pop out three or more in a day. It all comes down to technique, level of detail, style, and deadlines. Most commercial artists (that is my day job) have to work with tight deadlines and so they work faster, but other wise I say take as long as you need and don't sweat the clock.

I don't have a deadline, yes. But it would be frustrating if I needed months for a flat color picture. I *do* take my time. Not everyone works that long on free requests. Or pictures just for fun. I want to practice and improve.

The speed will come with experience and time, I promise. Just don't try to push it to happen to fast or you will make basic mistakes. (just got a massive list of mistakes made in the fox painting because I rushed already. v.v)

Everyone makes mistakes, it is very easy to do when you rush or spend way to much time staring at something. Why a fresh set of eyes always helps.

One reason why you get faster is not rushing, but that you learn how to do things more effectively, especially with GIMP or so. I am far from knowing all functions yet, but the time I spend searching things has gotten shorter already. Also the amount of trial and error until something looks half-way right. One day I even might be able to draw a character without reference. It's easier when you don't have to look at several opened windows (or paper sheets) at once. Saves time. And yes, when your eyes are tired you make mistakes. I don't see my typos anymore after some time and start to confuse words.

Hot keys are also wonderful too. In PhotoShop I use hot keys so much I some times forget where stuff is in the menus. lol

Even your top artists use references so don't be in a rush to abandon them. I do understand how they can clutter your screen and desk though. I held that problem until I got myself a wider desk, and duals screens. Now an average painting will have one screen packed full with reference material and my desk cluttered with notes and books. Okay maybe I never did solve the problem, just gave myself more room to clutter lol.

Things like that, yes. Can save you a lot of time when you know what you are doing. Or special brushes. You have to test them first to learn which ones provide the effect you want. Takes much longer at the beginning. Tarno as Christmas ornament took me maybe thirty hours altogether (can't say exactly, four days, but I was writing comments and stuff, too), but much of it was trying things until I got what I wanted. The last one was much faster already. Things which don't work at all you don't try again.

On the other hand this creates the effect you mentioned: when turning the sketch into line art all I see is lines, curves and angles, sometimes I can't tell where I am. I make the pictures huge while working on them, like 3000x5000 or more and go up to 200% zoom when improving lines. I started faving the stock images I intend to use from the beginning in an extra gallery folder so that I find the link more easily when I have to give credit. Some stock accounts I watch. Like justmeina. He's a good model for Tarno and I like some of the poses. Which reminds me: I will have to look for clothes references, too. Nothing against nudity (especially when it's an attractive man), but I don't think my characters will run around naked all the time. Not to mention that I intend to do a request from time to time (which can be a really good practice, too).

I don't think I have used much DA stock myself. I keep bumping into problems with them, so I have reverted to using stock sites and friends. One friend of mine is a remarkable photographer whose given me full rights to all his photos. I also have conned a few friends into posing for me, but maybe I should relook through DA stock for stuff.

Some people don't allow this or that. While I understand it, sometimes one could wonder: why do they put it into stock resources when so much is not allowed? Well, there's enough material I can use. I don't think I will sell much in the near future. The only alternative would be using only my own photographs, self-made 3D models (latest version of DAZ does not work with the free plug-ins on my computer) or manipulated game screen shots. One day I want one of these wooden puppets, because sometimes finding a good pose takes ages. Yesterday I looked up naked or lightly dressed women, not because I wanted a female nude or sexy dress, but because I have to see the joints when working on the next request.

^^ I actually own a wooden model like the one you are describing and a hand online version. Although to be honest I ended up never really using them. You might also wanna try stock sites off DA. There are ones strictly for artists, and than just general ones. For work and art I use them a ton. ^^
