Description Show: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Episode: S7 E3
Year: 2017

Writer(s): Sammy Crawley, Whitney Wetta

SWEET! We got an episode of MLP: Friendship Is Magic written by The Loud House alumni! On its face, this episode should be terrible with a lot of the stuff it does and forgets about in canon, but it pulls off everything so perfectly, it can easily make those mistakes make perfect sense for the plot. I mean Cadence and Shining Armor did appoint Sunburst as Flurry Heart's foalsitter and magic tutor, so they likely wouldn't have to go all the way to Ponyville to get Twilight to do it, but considering how overworked they are taking care of her, and that maybe Sunburst simply isn't available, it all makes perfect sense.

Trying to take care of a baby when you have a very busy day ahead of you is a very, very bad idea, as we are shown here. Twilight could've just dropped Flurry off on one of her friends, Starlight Glimmer, Celestia, Discord or anybody really because of her schedule, but she let pride get the better of her in trying to prove she was the BAE (Best Aunt Ever, you sickos...) to her brother and sister in-law/former foalsitter. Just because you're the Princess of Friendship doesn't mean you can't fuck things up and let your own reputation get the better of you.

One of the most important things this episode does though is act as a VAST improvement over "Baby Cakes" in every single way. That particular episode, beyond being a tired cliché, beyond being gross, was a complete disregard to the canon of the show, especially since it laid the grounds for these rules WITHIN THE SAME EPISODE! Baby unicorns and pegasi getting magical bursts that come and go does NOT mean they should have expert control and be able to perform magic better than experts! Fledgling wings cannot support a baby, much less someone much bigger latched onto that baby! Not to mention Pinkie Pie acted like a complete dolt and an asshole not wanting to own up for the fact that she's incompetent at taking care of kids despite the good lesson she learned in the end anyways.

With Flurry Heart being an alicorn and Twilight's niece, it makes perfect sense for her to be able to do some decently skilled magic as a baby. As I just said: Sunburst is her magic teacher, so of course this foal has some mad skills despite still being in diapers. But she is still a baby after all and can't quite do magic on the level of her auntie. Plus, LOOK AT DEM WINGS! No shit, she can fly circles around her auntie Twily, much less any other pegasus! Plus, with this episode, we get a better grasp of her personality as a character: she's one of the best examples of a brainy baby I've ever seen in cartoons. Despite basically being an infant prodigy, she's still a baby and although aware of her surroundings, doesn't quite understand a lot of what she does. Also, she acts just like a puppy! That alone gives her cutie points surpassing Pound and Pumpkin Cake!

Yeah, taking a baby into a sick ward full of kids with what amounts to chicken pox is a horrible idea, especially when that baby is basically a god. Flurry Heart causes a lot of trouble for Twilight, but it's clear she doesn't know any better despite thinking she knows what she's doing. As such, she can be excused for her actions and still remain likable. Plus, that scene where she and Twilight manipulate the sick ward with their high-level magic shows just how well the animation has improved this season with a spectacular panning circular shot.

Now we get to the most important scene: Twilight's scolding. Was she right to basically yell at a baby, not to mention her own niece, for causing all this trouble, even though she didn't mean it? Yes and no. In a way, Flurry Heart at this age needs to be taught right from wrong and that her actions have consequences; since she is very advanced for her age, this is extremely apparent. But as a baby, she needs love and attention now more than ever in her life, and Twilight, being so busy, wasn't able to do this despite allowing herself to take care of someone when she was far too busy. So really, I can completely excuse Flurry Heart for everything she did by virtue of missing her mommy and daddy. Even Twilight admits it was wrong of her to take up this task and even worse of her to not pay any attention to her niece. It isn't so much shifting the blame, it is someone realizing quality time supersedes quantity and that you shouldn't bite off more than you can chew. All in all, I'd happily call this an episode of very high quality. I'd expect nothing less from writers who know how to write kid characters very well.

this episode is basically how baby cakes should have been like

this episode was so cute

I wish that there was a scene where Flurry Heart turned Twilight into a foal/baby pony version of herself Twilight would have been adorable as a foal

Unpopular opinion: I actually enjoyed Baby Cakes and thought it was the best episode of season 2.

I fixed one error in the first paragraph of your review summary, so do the same thing as always:

My only problem with this episode is that Flurry Heart gets almost no consequences for her actions until near the end. Even then, it was barely much.

Other than that, this was pretty good.

Flurry of Emotions but every line Shining Armor speaks is "Mashed peas, her favorite"

At least, that's the meme idea my brother and friend had when watching this episode. XD

Knowing Mr. Enter, he'll probably make a retrospect journal entry on DA briefly discussing his thoughts on the season overall, making brief statements on each episode in it. He hasn't been active in making FiM review videos in ages, despite those being what got him his start on YouTube before launching his Animated Atrocities and Admirable Animations series, respectively.

Flurry of Emotions but every gurgle and baby noise Flurry Heart makes is replaced by borks from Gabe the Pupper.

I'm glad the writers knew that listening to Flurry throw a temper tantrum would be annoying and had it only be a couple seconds long.

Right now, this episode is my favorite of Season 7 (unless the finale does something to blow this out of the park.)

IMO, this proves that, with the right type of writers (and the fact that this season has two story editors), a baby episode can be done properly.

Anyway, great review man
