Ummm...well to be honest I just made it cause of my arttrade aaaand to celebrate or goal of the Lady Oscar memorial book with another friend.
I loved it when I was much younger and didn't know a single fact about french history and such...
Today, I never ever would dare to recommend this anime/manga to get into this material
But what do you expect if a manga is based on a biography of an author (Stafan Zweig) which wrote nothing better than a big fat lie/novel of a woman who is glorified unjustly these days!
BUT again - I still love and adore the style(s) of it!^^ *yay* XDD

I see ^^ Haha, I'm in love in the manga and anime even though I've heard many lectures from my cousin who is a history teacher, a passionate, and his favorite period of all times and places is tada! French revolution XD He even learned French in order to read books on the topic that haven't been translated ^^' So yeah, of course there is a huge difference between a Rose of Versailles fairytale and historical facts. But to tell you the truth, I'm not looking for historical facts when I'm reading this manga, haha If someone asked me about the best material covering the French revolution, I wouldn't recommend this manga either. But if someone asked me about the beautiful, sugarcoated, tender, and tragic romance, then hell yes! Go and read it XD But that's just me haha. The first Ikeda's manga I've ever read was Ten-no hate made, the story covering a part of Polish history. I'm from Poland, and I knew the differences immediately. So when I got to reading Rose of Versailles I was like "Oh, this is Ikeda Riyoko, don't take her seriously when it comes to historical facts" ^^' Maybe that's why Rose of Versailles didn't surprise me at all, who knows? But again, that's just me

I did exactly the same like your cousin XDD Because most of the books (good and bad) are in french only. I mean ofc since it's french history
And well you know, it's okay if people still love this manga. I won't and can't change that. And tbh you make some of the exceptions, because you said it yourself that you DO know the differences, you see?
A lot of people don't and take it as it would be the truth just cause Ikeda had read a 'biography', you know...
You know I love and adore the king Louis XVI., so what bothers me the most are all the lies in that Manga about him, because except of his coronation and death day, or that he liked the hunt and locks nothing is right. Even not the way he liked locks, in fact!
BUT I really do love Alain and Diane an Oscar Mother Emilie (even though the real one was still a child herself when in the fiction Oscar was born, but well,... *cough*
