Description For normal people getting started in firearms handling a single shot .22 rifle tends to be the name of the game. However I grew up in New York and got a late start (I was 19 at the time) and just growing into my current self and looking for something a little more effective for defensive purposes, and not knowing any better since I was on my own I got a 12 gauge Mossberg 500 field shotgun. This is what I cut my teeth on and grew up with, and I even included the first box of ammo I ever fired for sentimental reasons.

I've had many guns over the years, and over that time I've put the old Mossberg through many different changes. Different sights, shorter barrel, synthetic furniture and tactical add ons, but I've always come back to its original stock configuration because that's how I learned on it. It's no longer my primary defense weapon due to new additions to the lineup, but it's still my favorite out of the lot and I wouldn't let it go for anything.

I have one of these next to my bedroom door.

The bedroom door is too far away for my tastes. Under the bed or by the nightstand is how I roll.

I never considered those places.

I do so love the Mossberg 500, and with its simplicity of operation, and incredibly reliable mechanism, I'd suggest it as a first gun and home defense gun for anyone as long as they can handle the recoil.

I prefer an MP5 or the H&K SA80 5.56mm Assault Rifle myself. But it's always nice to have a shotgun for reserve along the lines of the Remmington 870.
