Very unique and beautiful. I commend you for being so creative and enjoy an artist who likes to go beyond simple boundaries, however to me it takes away from the reality of the story. Snow White is supposed to be an innocent, almost naive young woman. She trusts everything and everyone.. traditionally in the Grimm stories as well as in Disney. If she wasn't the story wouldn't have such a strong appeal to it. It takes away from the morale too. As a critic, this is what I state. As a fellow artist, I find this beautiful to look at! Overall, very well done!

Thank you for your comment. You are right about how show is portrayed in the stories but this is a twist on that knowing full well the true nature of Snow. On a side note, please watch for my friend Armie Hammer as the Prince in the upcoming Snow White film "Mirror Mirror".

This is really well done but you should include your reference source in the artist comments. [link]

Using a reference is fine but when you say "Here's my version" it gives the impression that you came to this concept all on your own. It's disingenuous.

It was done in 2004 when I was learning illustrator. Thank you for the snotty comment. I read your blog and also noticed you call yourself a filmmaker. What films have you made? If you haven't made a film or worked on one it's disingenuous to call yourself a filmmaker. I make a living working on films and television shows and you can find me on IMDB.

P.S. I found your movie review...well, please make a film before you continue to critique films.

It wasn't intended to be snotty at all. I've seen people's work get removed from DA for not having proper reference sitings. Believe it or not, I was trying to help you because I genuinely like the image. If I'd intended to be snotty I would not have included a compliment. I've been on DA a long time and I spend far more time encouraging artists and trying to help them. I don't leave snide remarks for the sake of being snide. That isn't who I am. You should really try assuming the best in people before you jump to the worst conclusions.

As for my filmmaking, I've worked on "Chasing Amy" as well as several other independent projects and write my own scripts. My work has also been appeared on Italian Television. I've been associated with "Top Hat Productions", "View Askew Productions," "Blonde Ambition productions", "Main Street Productions," as well as others and worked with casting agencies. I have a degree in filmmaking from the Art Institute in Philadelphia only because I couldn't afford to go to the other colleges that accepted me: NYU, AFI, USC, Temple, Vancouver Film. No I am not on IMDB. So I haven't worked for some major studio, nor am I a household name--doesn't mean I'm not a filmmaker any less than you are a professor because you've only been doing it for a year. I'm just starting out. No one starts at the top.

No one has to be an expert on anything to supply their opinion on it. My film reviews are a way to share my love of cinema with my friends and anyone who cares to listen (or read). If I thought I were an expert, I'd be submitting them to film magazines or trying to make a career out of it like as a teacher or a critic.

I'm sorry my simple comment caused such an aggressive response. I'll be sure to avoid your gallery in the future.

Chasing Amy? Wow, I know the art director Jim Williams on 'Chasing Amy'. We know someone in common. I went to Columbia College in Chicago because I couldn''t afford the other schools. Teaching at AFI was supplemental income during the Writer's Strike and I was teaching something that I know very well. Please believe me that I know about starting from the botom up. I started as a grip/electric in Chicago and moved out to LA to be an art department assistant on The Polar Express. From there I worked several films before becoming a graphic artist/designer for 'CSI: Miami' and a lot of other television shows. I've directed a few music videos and commercials and I'm currently in negotiations to sell a spec script I've written. My thought on film critics is that they are all failed or wannabe filmmakers. Roger Ebert, huge film critic, is a prime example...His only film credits include such great hits as 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls' and 'Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens'. Such great films... ugggh.

Sorry to come across as aggressive. Hope you have a great day.

Just the fact that you were affected by the writer's strike to need to seek supplemental income tells me that you are much further along than I am. Much further. I do agree with your surmise of many critics. What I dislike about most critics is that they really don't have any understanding of the amount of work--and PEOPLE that go into making a film and they pay little or no attention to the technical aspects of it's creation. Ebert, whose reviews I loathe, not long ago wrote an article discounting the gaming industry for having any artistic merit. Seriously? There is as much, if not more involved in making the really high quality games out there now. He's already proven that he's not much of a writer. Would he even know what to do with a camera or Maya? Unlikely. So I'm very selective in what I read about films. I look for more in depth analysis than he ever gives. Cineaste magazine is among my favorites.

I really wish I could say I've done more, that my scripts have even been looked at...but I can't. I'm working on doing a few short films for festivals and such. I'm really not that interested in going the big-budget route. I'm a huge foreign film fan and one thing I've found in most foreign film is that the budgets are low, the story is awesome and the acting is quality. So that's where my focus is.

I'm glad we could settle things out. It sounds like I could learn some things from you about the industry. Thanks for taking some time out to respond to me.

The industry? The only real advice I can offer is:
Work your ass off.
Be persistent.
Be genuinely nice to everybody because you never know who your next boss is going to be.
On Features...The Director is God.
On Television...The Writers are God.
On Commercials...Avoid unless you like a good ass whooping.
On Music Videos...Don't ever work on an R. Kelly video. You won't get paid.
About Politics...Don't talk about it. If you are a Conservative/Republican, you'll get fired. If you're a Liberal/Democrat, agree with everything your Liberal boss is saying or you'll get fired. It's best to nod your head and keep working. Liberals are not Tolerant in this industry, even with other Liberals.
Big budget films are great even at the assistant level. Lower budget films can be great but people get fired for doing the right thing when their boss doesn't.
Always tell the truth because the lies will get you fired.
Actors forget that real work happens from the art department because when they show up on set, everything is already there.
If you want to direct, do it through writing, or be an editor on a Bond film.

I wish you luck on all of your endeavors. Don't get discouraged. You'll have to stand on a mountain of "No's" before you get one "Yes".

i absolutely referenced that if that's what you mean...
people reference photos all the time for artwork.
i was learning illustrator at the time and needed something to practice with. so i referenced that photo and drew it in illustrator then drew a bg.
nice eye for catching that one.

egads, do I recognise Shalom Harlow here? Well, from the waist down I do. hehh. The clolous! Just.. Disney to a tee. However, as alluring as the foreground image is, it is the background which works so well to me. The illusion of movement in the branches of the trees and the tall grass is quite something.
If I had one quibble, it would be the missing element. That being whatever she is focused on. 90% of me makes it out as a flower such as a dandelion head, yet there is 10% that chuckles imagining a left-handed cigarette perched between her fingers.

CAn you do smoke rings yet?

The eroticism of the piece stems from the fact she's alone and at the same time in a "pleasurable" mood.
The lifting of the dress is leading to something else very erotic so she's not really concerned about focusing on something in her hand but focused on what her hand is about to do.
The eroticism is also connected to the mind of the viewer and what the viewer brings to the piece on their own.
Or atleast, that's what I was going for.
Thank you for your comments. I appreciate them.

I must admit I adore your own scandalous eye, sir. This is wonderful, besides being well-executed and a huge portend of your progress.

My only quibble is with the composition by her leg, which might mislead the eye to see her thigh as a bit thinner than makes sense. Ultimately, I think your intention becomes clear, but it's a bit of a thwart on first glance. I might like a slightly smoother transition beneath her neck, too.

To your "big picture," though, your "setting" is dazzling and ideally elaborate. Her expression appears perfect. Hell, her assets look so very, very splendid. (I'm also quite taken with your rendition of her shoulders - the dimensionalty of form/fabric there is awesome.) And, of course, the star of the image, as might well should be, is the lace pattern of her stockings altogether. It's nice how the overall composition draws us upward first, but ultimately plonks us right down onto your punchline.

Superb. Have you hooked up with the * vbu yet? You already have every basis to belong mightily among their number.

No, seriously, this is very good. The only comment i have is that her right bicep is somewhat... atrophied... maybe should be a touch larger. Good concept tho!
