Description I know, playing the ps2 2000 years in the future is kind of random... but oh well!

Done in Painter 9. I think my style is becoming more realistic/painterly as each painting progresses...

I love MOMO's cute face and Jr.'s expression -- it doesn't seem to be going well for him on the screen, hm?

While I still prefer Tanaka's designs in Xenosaga I over the two successors, I think you really did them justice here.

Hee... in looking at Jr's expression, I am reminded of a certain quote from Chapelle's show:

Commentator 1: This is getting so intense! Look at those nostrils flaring!
Commentator 2: Yeah, it makes me want to vomit.

It does indeed look more realistic, but with a slight caricature twist on it. Judging from their expressions, I take that that MOMO is winning.

I especially like the textures and the colors. The folds on the fabric look great. Junya's expression is priceless, and MOMO's hair is so cute! I think I'm still having panic attacks while looking at EP3 MOMO. >> I hate that bodice thing. *faints*

For some reason the background really draws me into the painting. The rough brush strokes contrast well with the detailed characters. You should do this style more often I just love how you painted MOMO's hair!

rdsullivan In reply to faroresama [2006-05-03 04:10:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, I just now realized how fond i am of the palette knife (both digitally and in real life. I was going crazy w/ the palette knife in portrait painting class today).

Hehe, isn't MOMO, like, the cutest thing next to kittens and puppies?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Narbe [2006-05-02 21:17:02 +0000 UTC]

Hehe. Jr.'s expression reminds me of my brother's whenever we play DOA2 or Soul Calibur 2 or 3. ^^

Excellent coloring and textures. Their clothes look so realistic. So do MOMO's and Jr.'s faces and hair, actually. I'm also loving how MOMO's so intent on the screen, and how Jr. seems disgruntled not only in his face and the way his eyes are glancing sidelong, but in how he's holding (or not quite holding) the controller, too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rdsullivan In reply to Narbe [2006-05-03 04:08:54 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you!

I was having a bit of trouble w/ Jr.'s hands at first, but I'm glad they're effectively reflecting his frustration!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Narbe In reply to rdsullivan [2006-05-04 17:06:34 +0000 UTC]

Heh. When I continuously lose when playing fighting games (darn Capcom vs. SNK!!), I'll either grip the controller tightly, or will hold it half heartedly and press buttons with other fingers, rather like how Jr.'s holding it in this picture. So the way he's holding it is pretty believable (imo). Great work with the minor details like that.

I take my cell phone, set it on vibrate only, put it in a condom and slide it in my pussy. Then I take my home cordless phone and call my cell phone. I just let my cell vibrate while I rub my clit.

I like to use the edge of the wash basin. Make sure it is clean. Open your pussy and bend down and stick it in the edge of the wash basin. Massage it against the wash basin by gyrating in circular motion. Your pussy will get wet and you will know when you're cum. it gives me an intense orgasm and I enjoy it very much. Try it.

hehe, they could be playing anything and MOMO would still win. They're probably playing a two-player or multi-player game.

...or, as a friend on another forum put it:

I can see the caption now... "Dammit, what the hell did they DO to us in Episode 2! MOMO... get my guns."

Mouse-eater [2006-05-02 16:40:41 +0000 UTC]

OMG I love this Rosie. I don't so much like it that they both have allergy/cold-noses (think Rudolph here), but it's very well executed. Am I the on;y one who thinks that Jr. looks like he's getting absolutely PUNK'D by MOMO? He looks like he just lost his upteenth round of Soul Caliber. XD

The eyes on both are very expressive--Jr's are shockingly blue, and I think that drives home his peircing gaze. Their positions are pretty natural. Awesome attention to clothing with folds and design accuracy, but I might venture to add that the touch of sky-blue for shading on MOMO's blouse doesn't seem to work very well. I know light blue compliments white on shading, but with the color pallete choices you used for the rest of the painting, it clashes. Then again that just may be my warped perception ;.

Great job though.

rdsullivan In reply to Mouse-eater [2006-05-02 17:14:59 +0000 UTC]

lol! Thanks Kaz! Jr. should know better than try to beat this 100-series observational realian at... well, anything!

Yeah, the cold noses are a bit overused in a lot of styles (including mine ), but they do sometimes make cute pictures even cuter... or just weirder looking. I should try toning it down though before -every- painting of mine gets a cold! *pours robitussin on her tablet*

I definitely see what you mean about the blue being out of place on her shirt. I really should have translated that color to the rest of her, and was actually thinking of doing so, but I chickened out and got impatient at the same time (bad combination). However, I should definitely try experimenting with more colors, especially balancing the warms and colds in future paintings.

Thanks again for your comment and critiques! I always look forward to seeing them, as well as seeing your new artwork!

Mouse-eater In reply to rdsullivan [2006-05-02 17:24:24 +0000 UTC]

Nuuu! Intuos' are allergic to Robitussin, don't do it--! *secret service-style dive* XD

And no problem, it's definitely a pleasure to be able to provide feedback on quality art.

I see cold noses infrequently enough that they remain something of a novelty to me at least. However, the color thing reminds me that I need to do something similar with my shading (when I blend instead of cel-shade), AND work better with shadow. I think I can learn a lot just from looking at more realistic pieces like this one. It's so sad that some people only try and draw/do art in a BESM/manga style. It's refreshing to see works like these (and the Kevin one--I'm still drooling over here).

Now, where did my energy for future art projects go...? *search* Oh yeah, procrastination. >.>

Really nice. I really like the direction you're moving in.

Which brushes did you use for this one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rdsullivan In reply to MelissaFindley [2006-05-02 16:53:34 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you!

I used the subtle palette knife (sometimes with the resaturation @ zero), wet acryilc brush (though at a very small size), opaque acryilics detail brush 5, and the smudge tool.

I really want to find more brushes to create different effects & textures, but I am still a little overwhelmed by the brush creator tool! I think I also need to work on balancing warm and cool colors in my paintings, since my colors (especially the shading colors) seem a bit mute.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaFindley In reply to rdsullivan [2006-05-02 22:41:25 +0000 UTC]

I mostly use the artist's oils brushes, preferring the dry oil brush, and the wet oily brush. I set my blend to somewhere between 90-100% and use them to block in colors and blend. Though I really like the "Smudge" tool for skin shading, since it blends a bit but leaves a little texture. Soft airbrushes are good for subtler shading effect, but I do sometimes blur and smear a bit on backgrounds. Though I'm trying a rougher background right now sort of similar to yours in this one, in texture/effect.

I've been slowing working on learning to make my own brushes, it's really not hard to make them, it's setting up all the variations that gets tricky. The background in my "Old Gold" painting is a custom brush.

I really like the shading you did on the girl, the blues in her shirt could be put into her hair/skin tones, too, to punch it up. And the boy could use a few stronger highlights on his face, like the girl. I love her hair, though. Palette knife, for hair?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rdsullivan In reply to MelissaFindley [2006-05-03 04:37:35 +0000 UTC]

How interesting! I always liked playing with the oil brushes on Painter, but didn't like how the thick paint texture wouldn't go away. Maybe there was some option that I needed to click off, or I just didn't know what I was doing (<< pretty much the case)

I used the palette knife to quickly do the base color for her hair, but all of the detail/highlights/light pink are pretty much from the acrylic detail brush. I pretty much only use those two tools for hair in all of my drawings.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaFindley In reply to rdsullivan [2006-05-03 10:49:47 +0000 UTC]

If you use the "artist's oils" brushes (not the regular Oil brushes), there are several (like the dry brush and wet oily) that don't have the "impasto" effect (the big thick 3D glomps of oil). If you go into the brush creater palatte, you can also toggle off the impasto effect on other brushes, too. I just like the artist's oils cause they blend better.

rdsullivan In reply to MelissaFindley [2006-05-03 16:52:48 +0000 UTC]
