But they are a necessity. I know if I still had an active friendship with everyone I have ever known, my head would explode. I can barely keep up with the ones I have now.

What I meant was, I don't really enjoy it when you get to know people, you're both really friendly, and you seem to have a connection. You chat every day, have inside jokes and all the rest, then one day they're like "KThanxsBai!" and they're gone.
Dropped like a sack of potatoes.
I only have a handful of people I happily call my friends, but, I doubt they feel the same way about me.
Not trusted enough for them to tell you their worries, concerns. Not loved enough for them to make the effort to talk to you. You have to go out of your way for them.
You think the world of someone, but they think they world of someone else, and then they complain at you that their favourite person doesn't think the world of them.
-sigh- It's nasty when you get caught up in that vicious circle!
