Description My second 3D gnarl (the first will take forever to render) based loosely on some helpful tips by SaTaNiA I found here  (I had tried to make 3D gnarls before, but I was always missing the zscale).  Thanks to him for divulging his secrets

Of course, this isn't a "true" 3D gnarl as there are other things in there, but I think it's cool nonetheless.  A portal?  A mystical temple?  Something ethereal, anyway.

An Apophysis 7x fractal.  As with all my fractals, I highly recommend you zoom in for the best viewing experience.

Just a quick question -_- what is a fractal?

A "fractal", in the strictest sense, is a mathematical equation defined in terms of itself ("recursively").  Perhaps the clearest example is "Sierpinski's Triangle "--note how each triangle contains three smaller triangles, and each of those contains three smaller ones, etc.  What we fractal artists try to do is to take the same basic principles (albeit in a more complicated form) and create art using software programs such as "Apophysis", "Chaotica", "JWildfire", "Mandelbulb 3D", "Ultra Fractal", and many others.

In other words, this piece (or any other piece you see in the "Fractal Art" category) is, in essence, a complicated mathematical equation designed and manipulated to be a piece of abstract digital art.  I personally enjoy both math and art, and fractals allow me to explore both simultaneously to create something that I feel is truly unique.

If you're interested in learning more about fractals, or creating them yourself, apophysis-7x.org/ is an excellent resource.

With the title saying Enter Here I am thinking this is like an alien tractor beam to pull us into the ship. Cool work.

This is beautiful. It reminds me of a magical building you would find in Lord of the Rings.
