Previous - Next (Ophi's perspective) - Next (Apa's perspective)
Apa’s heavy hoofbeats slowed as he reached the center of town. The sun was now below the horizon and the streets were lit by soft moonlight. He was familiar with the street layout as even if he and his mother lived a good distance out at the very edges of town, he would often accompany Mehit in her performances. Well, at least before the deelagun attack and the rattle’s rest changing hands.
As he passed through where the nova tree sapling was in the town square, his sharp ears began to pick out the buzz of conversation and a few notes of a stringed instrument floating through the atmosphere. His hoofbeats picked up in reaction along with his heart rate, moving towards the sound with more urgency.
Arriving at the warmly lit front entrance of the tavern, he could tell instantly that it was busy tonight. Of course it was though, it was the last day of Heartkindle month. No doubt it was full of both couples and lonely gros looking for some company alike. The front door was held wide open by a sign listing a few heartkindle special drinks and the noise from inside leaked out. The buzz of conversation was nearly overwhelming at this point but he could hear Sammie’s music playing bright and clear through it all. Of course, while this noise bothered Apa’s sensitive ears, Ophi probably couldn’t even hear much. He could see strange electrical boxes set up around the stage as well, Knavish must be here too. He rolled his eyes and hoped he just wouldn’t run into him. Apa was a pacifist, but he definitely held a grudge nearly worth breaking that for against the man that recently left Apa’s mom to take care of an egg on her own.
Taking a quick glance around Apa couldn’t find Ophi in the crowd. It was so crowded, with every table full and then some. Ophi would always talk louder because he was hard of hearing, so maybe he could listen in for him with the help of a little magic? As much as it might hurt his ears, it would be the fastest way to find him. He was determined to give Ophi his heartkindle letter tonight.
Apa’s ears swiveled back and forth, his magic glands lighting up once again as he tried hard to focus on that familiar voice.
“Woah there. Don’t end up on the floor now.”
Apa winced. Wrong familiar voice. That’s Knavish for sure.
“I-Ish fine. ‘m all good!” shouted another familiar voice, followed by giggling.
That… was the right one right? Yeah that was Ophi for sure. It was too close to the other one though. Apa turned to look in the direction he heard the voices coming from and spotted who he was looking for pretty quick. There was Ophiuchus. Being held up by Knavish as he tried to get his bearings about him.
His heartbeat picked up again and he stood in place, watching and listening for a minute.
“It’s a little crowded here, want to go somewhere a little more quiet?” he heard Knavish coo. Ophi giggled a bit back.
Ophi grabbed at Knavish’s shirt as he managed to find his balance again and held him a little too close. No… he wasn’t letting go. He nuzzled his face into Knavish’s coat and they began to walk off towards the back entrance.
Apa felt cold feeling wash over him. His heartbeat was far too loud now, drowning out anything else he might hear of the conversation. Not that he would care to hear a word more anyway. He struggled to process what he just saw. His stomach began to tie itself in knots and he saw tears begin to well up on the edge of his vision as he dropped the letter he had been holding in his beak this whole time.
Ophiuchus with… Knavish? He was naive but he wasn't stupid. He could see the signs right in front of him here. On the last night of heartkindle, the gro who is most dear to him was probably going to have an egg with that man. Probably the only gro in the world that Apa really had any problem with.
He noticed his nose began to run and he sniffled, holding back a silent and choked sob. He should get out of there. His heartkindle letter forgotten on the floor, he turned and walked out of the tavern. His hoofbeats picked up in rhythm until the buzzing of the rattle’s rest was replaced by his own sniffling and voiceless sobs.

Aim your pitchforks and knives in that direction.
Though I'm not entirely innocent either of course.
