It looks like one of those lava lamps...

The way lava lamps behave is not very dissimilar from the way salt deposits behave, so it fits.

Flying rocks and blue cat-people that don't look like the native vertebrates at all.

Lavalamp land! I do hope they don't come crashing down. That would be my main concern if I was there. Looking up and seeing more Earth must be interesting though. Reminds me of a nightmare I once had.

Nice sense of depth. I feel that the trees, particularly on the small peaks in the middle, are too repetetive though.

With any sense of logic applied, those structures shouldn't have formed in the first place, so instead of crashing down, they will rather get broader at the tips and fuse with neighboring diapirs.

You're right, on some places it looks like they were planted in rows...

Do it, it's not my business what people decorate their screens with.

Well, it IS your art, so it's kinda your business. You might not want me to, that's why I ask.

If I would not want people using my stuff in one way or another, I wouldn't post it on the internet, since most people don't ask.

Ramul In reply to SoerW [2011-01-06 17:29:49 +0000 UTC]

Yes, such structures actually exist, but only subterraneous. Small ones can be formed by mud sediments that get compacted, but the really large, several km tall ones are salt diapirs.

Да-да, я видела подобное в пещерах, когда ездила на экскурсию. Очень понравилось.)
А так, чтобы скалы, горы, покрытые зеленью?

Ramul In reply to SoerW [2011-01-06 17:58:41 +0000 UTC]

Outside of the underground it's not possible, because diapirs form when a material with enough plasticity gets buried under sediments of higher density. The possibility of rocks having a higher density than air is rather ...unlikely. The other possibility is erosion of the surrounding rock after formation, but salt isn't really known for its weathering resistance and the bulbous tips on thin stilts won't survive gravity.

I think you confused diapirs and stalagnates a bit; while they look a bit similar in this form, they form by totally different conditions. (It would be a bit strange to see diapirs in caves, because they are extremely large structures; I had visited a mine inside a diapir and it's just salt and anhydrite there, not much to see.)

I see you do people's avatars for the mini-gifts; my avatar is that green pervert wearing a single blue sock.

К сожалению, я в этом мало что понимаю, поскольку в пещерах была лишь однажды. Хотелось бы когда-нибудь еще побывать в пещерах, хоть там темно, но по-своему красиво.)

Да, решила в этот раз немного поучаствовать.)

In all seriousness, I think I would prefer this world over that of Avatar... Less things trying to kill you, perhaps?

Who knows what the bushes and trees hide? Sometimes, many small, venomous creatures are worse than the occasional large predator.

LINCARD1000 In reply to Ramul [2011-01-05 19:08:54 +0000 UTC]

I come from a country that has no snakes, scorpions and only one venomous spider (that is remotely dangerous to humans). It has no native mammals other than a bat. But the critters it does have are primitive... and usually have large jaws. I am always more afraid of the small things than the big ones.
