I would second leon0015 here, I'd say Brazil aswell but don't know it for certain. Similar hilly/mountainous terrain, I've seen capybaras in Brazil myself, similar food.. (although I haven't seen any pão de queijo or black beans in the story yet : P)
Definitely South America though.
