There was a roar overhead and the wolf’s long legs buckled in fear. He sensed movement against his right shoulder and shifted uncomfortably. He was splayed out in the snow, a result of his hip giving out. Ahead of him an unblinking raven sat, too brave or too lazy to scatter from the wolf’s path. Perhaps the creature knew that he was no threat. Perhaps he smelled the promise of decay and was waiting for him to die in order to feed. The sun was setting over the forest, a ball of orange fire licking at the treetops. In the distance, a familiar mountain loomed. The wolf claw at the snow-cloaked ground eagerly, but every small movement shot pain through his legs the streamed up into his chest. He cried out in agony. All around him, odd forms gathered. They were amorphous auras of foreign colors yet familiar scents. He closed his eyes in fear and willed them to leave, but he knew when he opened them again they would still be there, watching him. I was really happy about this sketch, the coloring really didn't happen how I imagined at all. :\ I would've spent more time on this, but I may not have a ton of time to do more art before Christmas. We'll see! Anyway, I really wanted to illustrate this moment.

Excerpt:

”No,” he breathed.

The pale wolf circled around Faust’s crumpled body and then draped his own over it, wrapping his thick coat around his unconscious nephew to keep him warm as he lay in the snow. He lay protectively over the bloody form as he looked back up at Saurugol once again, shining tears glittering down his cheeks, his eyes burning with respectful conviction.

”My mind obeys you, Ade, but my heart cannot. I find that my feet won’t move from here. Faust may be a Betrayer of the gods, he betrayed us all with his secret disbelief… but he is no common, vulgar, rabble. He is the son of Hera, brother to the Alpha of Havir- and he’s been brought back to us by the very last of his strength. His soul may be beyond help, but perhaps he still has some part to play in the gods’ plans. The gods work through everything and everyone, not just the faithful. To leave Faust here may be to turn our nose at something the gods have brought us. It seems of too much haste to leave him here without discerning if he has some greater purpose,” he called, his normally mellifluous voice cracking with emotion. He whispered, more to himself than to Saurugol as he buried his face in the ruff of Faust’s neck, ”And I still pray every day… perhaps in vain… in the hope that the gods will have mercy on him.”

He paused in silence for a moment, his shoulders heaved in a silent, stifled sob.

Silvanus then picked up his head, yellow eyes earnestly fixing on Saurugol once again, ”And if there is a price to pay for Faust returning to Havir… let it be mine. I will entreat the gods to place any wrath they may bear on me, not the wolves of Havir. I am not convinced his return is against their will, but if it is, they will heed the High Priest’s bargain. Please, Saurugol.”
