Description Viscera Dragger

Magic the Gathering; Shards of Alaria. Β©Wizards of the Coast

Acrylic, Approx 11" x 7.5".

Original artwork SOLD

The Ogre dragged it's sorry decayed body throuigh the canyons, some instinctual part of it's brain stem still sending the signal to attack!

I had great fun with this character, I always enjoy working on Undead, and he was no exception. Especially as the Grixis world in this set of Magic is almost entirely undead, even the land is made up of putrefying flesh, with the rocky protruberences more like bones poking through.

I wanted to create a strong silhouette which would be framed by the lightning, whilst the focus of the lighest areas would be on his strange axe, forearms and intestines.

The dangling of the viscera achieves a very grisly image.

I remember playing Magic about a year back and seeing the art on this, and a few other cards, and noticing you had done the artwork on each of them. It was happenstance however, that I somehow came across you here. I'm definitely watching you and faving this.

You have a very interesting style... to say the least. Particularly in this picture I love the details given to help bring the rotting appearance together. You're one of the reasons I was so desperate to run a Grixis deck- the landscape, the creatures, the atmosphere- it all combines to make one neat environment.

Now that i've crossed swords with the acrylic painting myself, i am starting to hate you for being that good May i ask you for an advise...i am doing a character with a burning hammer in a Valley of Death/dungeon. The problem is how to make the iron hammer hot without making it look golden :S And shall it be the only light sourse or an additional background (moon) light would be a better solution? Oh, and btw i say your passion for real armour stuff while checking this blog of yours. I think you would rly enjoy a metal detector. Believe me, there is nothing more inspiring than digging a 2 thousand years old arrow that could have been used in a real battle (nod)
All the best,
Gollorr

By making the hammer head a lot lighter you could creat a glowing effect without having to resort to gold/yellow. As to light sources that's really up to how you want the composition to work.

Thanks

Your art is just so ridiculously dynamic. I love your use of acrylic. I don't come across many traditional artists of your caliber these days.
