I love this series... this place is truly amazing. I'm going to have to read up about it; I hadn't heard of it before.

I am not surprised that you haven't heard it. There are tons and tons of such unknown places (at least for people from west) in India. The most advertised and promoted attractions of India for west like Taj Mahal and Jaipur etc are peanuts or almost insignificant in terms of age and marvel and historical and cultural significance some of the un-advertised monuments. I don't blame too, India has such huge things to offer. It is difficult to decide which one to promote first which one later.
I am glad I could interest you beyond the usuals you see about India.

Definitely... I'm looking forward to reading a lot about these places. Even though I'm fairly well educated (MA degree), my exposure to Indian culture is just as you describe, limited to popularized places like the Taj Mahal. I just recently started reading about Vedic Math and that has also gotten me greatly interested.

You are 100% right about the Movie. In fact, the movie was shot at this place. But the place is magnificent with eyes, more than with cameras. The emotions are intense. Awe is incredible. As a city, Hampi was one of the most well built with proper infrastructure.

Fortunately for India, particularly for Southern India, where Hampi is located, Earthquake has not been a problem. But time and man. Hampi and Vijaya Nagara empire was over thrown by Muslim Rulers from Deccan. It is recorded in history that Hampi was plundered and pillaged for more than 6 months and all the riches of the capital of Vijaya Nagara was looted.
Hampi, is on UNESCO's World Heritage List, so no restoration work can be done without this body. What you see as the brick column is in fact a column of stone blocks to support the massive weight of the stone roof of the structure.
