One of my assignments at school was to closely study Walt Kelly's comic strip Pogo and copy it as close as possible to make three original, autobiographical strips of my own. Obviously I'm not as skilled an artist as Kelly was, but I think I did an OK job and the assignment was fun. I learned a lot about using a nib, although I still hate lettering by hand. I'm so bad at it! Aside from a little bit of clean-up and resizing, these three strips were done with traditional materials: pencil, pen nib, and brush pen. And yes, they are all based on true events.Starring (in order of appearance): an Australian friend represented by a platypus, myself as a hyena (since Kelly never drew straight up humans for Pogo), and my cats Gil and Hana.

Out of curiosity: Most of Walt Kelly's characters use incorrect grammar and spelling from what I remember. Did you choose to 'update' that aspect, or was it because your course told you to? Kind of missed the "We know the enemy, and they is us"- like statements, although Gil and Hana do give Kelly a run for his money

I decided to update it a bit because I wasn't comfortable playing around with Southern accents and incorrect grammar. It just didn't sit right with me since I'm not from the South and none of the strips were set there, either. I thought about it, and it was kind of fun to play around with the language, but in the end, I just couldn't commit to it.

Well, either way, I really enjoyed these - as I do SD (just as a sidenote). I also noticed I misquoted, which is an annoyance, but luckily the essence is still the same. Keep up the cool work

She has a friend who is AUSTRAILIAN, represented by a PLATYPUS. Chu herself is represented by a hyena, she had to do all animal characters so it would stay in the style of pogo

The art is really good! The lines are great and -jesus dat lettering-.
But, for a little critique, I feel the jokes themselves sort of fall flat. The first one is good, could be clearer with Mr. Australian Platypus saying "You ARE kidding, -right-?" but, it's not that hard to catch up to. The second one... I... maybeΒ I'm just dumb, but I don't really get it at all. I think some word play is going on, my I can't really track it it. (Which is a shame because the body language for the cats is fantastic.) And then, the last one is kinda funny in a dark way, I suppose. I can see were people will find it funny, but for me, personally, ti was more of a "Oh noooo, :C" Moment. It might have been funnier if the blackground wasn't shaded dark black, but, then again, maybe you weren't going for funny with that one.
I hope you get an A on the project, I hope you don't take my critique the wrong way! I really do love the art, the contrast in the inking works very well, compositional.

The jokes are a little weird because I had to follow the beats of Pogo, which is a comic that ran from the late 40s to the early 70s. That included the humor it employs. For the first strip, I couldn't write the word "right" as "-right-" because Walt Kelly never used hyphens to emphasize words that way. Besides, the word balloon is in line with the way that I imagine that character emphasizing his speech.
The second strip (the ones about the cats stealing pancakes and hiding them from me) is actually the most like a Pogo strip. Many Pogo comics derive their humor from being incredibly verbose and wordplay ("chalky chips", "cross" and "cross"). I agree that it's not really in line with what is considered funny today, but that was part of the assignment! Besides, I do think there's a lot to be learned from Kelly's approach to art and humor.
And lastly, the last strip actually isn't supposed to be funny. The assignment was specifically to write three comics (or more if you wanted): one had to be funny, one had to be sad, and one could be anything. So the third strip is the sad one.
Anyway, thank you for your honest opinions! I hope I've shed some light on why I made my decisions.

Hm! Yes, that does. To be honest, I'm not all that familiar with Pogo's work, so that probably was a big part of my confusion. (For the sake of clarity, I will say when I said "-right-" I didn't mean actually using hyphens, I'm just too lazy to input the HTML for italics. xD)
But yes, in explaining the assignment, I see why you made the choices you did. I hope I didn't come off as too harsh or anything. Keep on truckin', yo!

Great job! I really love the line work and I like the lettering a lot! Not sure what you dislike about your lettering it is really clean and easy to read, while still having life and character! Excited to see more of your CCS work as time goes on.
