Nico di Angelo x Reader: Part 7: Who Needs a Reason?
Note: This story has Nico di Angelo x Reader components.
You were removed from the arcade for bringing pets in, despite no longer having it. At least it wasn't being removed for destroying some old property no one even care about anymore. The mother you saw in the bowling alley gave you a nasty glare as if to say, Serves you right for abusing animals.
"I don't need your help," you told him as the two of you trudged down the streets.
"You're welcome," he grumbled.
You were the first to break the silence. You didn't want to be around him. Good for nothing, selfish camp-obsessed son of Hades. If he cared for his camp so much, then for all you care he could just stay there for life!
"You can't survive like this," he said. "Not when monsters keep chasing after you."
"So what do you propose, Nico?" you inquired with an icy tone. "Enrol me into camp? Oh, wait, I can't enter it."
Nico stopped. "You can at least come and train with me. Until you can handle a blade to fend for yourself."
"Oh, and when forces come and threaten the camp, you can summon for me to help protect the camp, is that what for?"
"Adrian!"
Pride took over you. You knew that, but you couldn't stop it.
Nico only wanted you for his camp's well being, so what was the use of following him?
"These monsters... They can only be defeated with a weapon out certain materials, such as Imperial Gold or Celestial Bronze. As for mine... Stygian Iron. You can't defeat them with some kind of random and rusted lever, it just can't harm them," Nico said, with a less angered tone. "At least have someone teach you the basics."
"Right, and I skip school for life, hide the sword from my dad-"
"The Mist will hide the sword, no problem," said Nico. "The school probably won't notice, like with Alex disappearing."
It was true. They haven't called anyone to ask if they've seen Alex. If your dad knew of the disappearance, he'd instantly ask you.
"As for your dad, you could say you have extra classes or something. You know him best to create the best lie to convince him," Nico continued.
"Fine," you finally said. "Until I can protect myself."
There he goes again. Considerate and worried of my future and well-being. Probably to avoid any misconception that demi-gods like him are actually bad news. Which would help is reducing the risks of another war between demi-gods.
"Speaking of protecting, where is your ring?" Nico suddenly said.
You didn't think he'd notice. You raised your right hand, the bronze ring with a skull on it no longer there.
"I got rid of it," you coolly said.
"What? Why?" Nico's outburst surprised you.
The spoken ring's skull had a sapphire eye that was loose so you could twist it. It had it no longer. You pried the sapphire loose in case Nico would like to track you and decided never to wear the ring again.
"It was for your safety..."
You could bear the charade of his wishes of keeping you safe no longer. "Why do you want to keep me safe so badly? What is your point? What? So you have people protecting the camp when trouble arises for it? It's not like you'd do this to everyone, Nico! So tell me, what is your point? Why are you doing this?"
"Why? Do you think I'm only doing this to protect my camp? I'm protecting... each demi-god," Nico said.
"I don't believe you!" you snapped.
Nico was silent. "The ring was to contact me if you were ever in trouble. You don't know how to fend for yourself. You can't enter the camp. You are a demi-god I found but are unable to enter Camp Half-Blood. What do you think? I've been showing you all the things a demi-god could have done, but yet you are not granted that privilege. I have given you false hope. I have given you a glimpse of safety that you could have, but you don't. That's why I feel obliged to protect you."
"Just because you pity me? Gee, thanks, I don't need your pity."
Even though your voice was rough, your anger was starting to simmer down. His reasons made more sense than your imaginary complaints.
"If I find another demi-god, I'd take them to camp. Most of us would do that due to the decrease of satyrs and our kind keeping a watch-out as demi-gods these days in schools as monsters no longer pose as a threat. However, you couldn't seem to enter, Chiron couldn't see you. I've shown you too much to just leave you be. You know you're a demi-god, that out there, in this world, there are things hunting you, and there's a sanctuary for our type, but you're not welcome. It's unlike others, but protection do exist, and even though you can't enter camp, I want you to still have it."
To you, it seemed to be a mixture of pity, regret, a promise he was unable to fulfill. A bit of sadness, a bit of remorse. Helplessness, and the desire to resurface once more. Redemption.
It still had the same vibe to you. To right the wrong. A reason to justify one self. However, the words he did speak of rang a conscience within you. There was some truth to it.
"Whatever your reason is, now all you have to do is to help me be able to fend off those monsters. Nothing more, nothing less. We don't talk about camp," you said, a hint of iciness in your voice.
He seemed to hesitate a bit, before he nodded. "...Alright then..."
You thought you heard him whisper something else under his breath, but you couldn't be too sure as you nodded back at him.
"If you say so... Adrian..."
