How do neutral pronouns work with languages like French or Spanish that have gendered nouns (not gendered pronouns, gendered NOUNS.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AWESOMEPANCAKES In reply to Kfcnyancat [2015-02-14 13:43:50 +0000 UTC]

I just use masculine pronouns in French, because il is the default pronoun in the language and elle (the pronoun which corresponds with my physical sex) is only for specifically feminine things. If you have a group of masculine subjects, it's ils. If you have a group of feminine subjects, it's elles. If you have a mixed group or one of unknown composition, it's ils. However, French is only my second language, so I'm unaware of whether there might be a better option.

An I prefer to live in a world where stupid people don't make up gender identities & then try to force there bullshit on to the rest of the world by inventing  pronouns & then getting pissy when no one wants to play a game of "lets pretend that this is how gender works."

Alas today we are both going to be disappointed.

I truly do not wish to offend you or anyone, so please do not take this as an insult or an attack, but...

Your examples of "gender neutral" pronouns are not grammatically correct. These are collective pronouns, which means that it is only correct to use them when referring to more than one person or thing at a time.

The only proper way to refer to a person without stating his or her gender is to call the person by name or to use the pronoun "it" (which actually may be offensive to some, so I wouldn't recommend it).

I personally prefer not to identify by either gender, but for the sake of my love for proper grammar, I will not allow people to call me a "they" (unless they are talking about more than one of me xP), but will instead tolerate being called "he," "she," "it," or any of the vast number of insanely ridiculous nicknames my Internet acquaintances have applied to me. xP

hey dude guess what i hav a rlly cool friend
do u kno their gender?????? nope, so what will you use to address them
you wouldnt use it, since theyre not an object
you dont know if theyre male or female, so your first instinct would be to say "oh yeah? what are they like?"
what makes that so different so using they/them as someones actual pronouns

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrammarshineHyena In reply to spacemushroompng [2014-08-14 00:26:39 +0000 UTC]

I don't really care, okay?  I will never use a collective pronoun to refer to a single person.  My "first instinct" is not, as you say, to ask "what are they like."  If no pronoun is good enough for that person, then that person shall be referred to by me as "that person," not as "they."

I personally prefer to refer to myself as "it."  I don't care if that makes others uncomfortable.  I'm not pushing the pronoun on them; I only use it for myself.  No one has any right to be offended by what I call myself.

well ok, im going to look at something you said in your original comment, saying that "they" is not grammatically correct.
type "Well, they sure are a nice person!" into word and tell me if the green line warning you that youre not writing a sentence that makes sense, if it doesnt and youre still skeptical, ask your kindergarten teacher

Word is a flawed program that accepts many mistakes and rejects many grammatically-correct sentences and phrases.  If you plan on using it as your only source of validation, then you may be sadly disappointed in life.

Kindergarten teachers do not teach grammar.

Trust me, guys.  I was practically raised by an advanced English teacher and have studied the rules of grammar extensively.  I do this shit for fun in my spare time.  English grammar is my #1 passion in life.  Do you honestly think you know more about it than I do?  :I

The word "they" is actually used, when talking about only one person too.

they personal pronoun; the third person, nominative case, usually plural, but sometimes used in the singular when the gender is unknown or irrelevant (objective case them, possessive their, possessive noun theirs, reflexive plural themselves, reflexive singular themself)

GrammarshineHyena In reply to HeiMantaHei [2013-08-24 15:04:50 +0000 UTC]

Just because it's in "wiktionary" doesn't mean it's correct.  I will trust all of the English literature and grammar training I have had in my life, not the Internet.

HeiMantaHei In reply to GrammarshineHyena [2013-08-24 15:34:07 +0000 UTC]

Pft, fine I still won't use the word "it" of any person ever, since it refers to an object (or an animal), not a person. And I won't either start using "ze" nor "e", since it would cause confusion, because they're not anywhere to be seen as used.

GrammarshineHyena In reply to HeiMantaHei [2013-08-24 20:14:51 +0000 UTC]

lawl.  I wouldn't use any of those to describe a person, either.  I just use "he" or "she."

If you don't know the person's gender, you can say "he or she" or (if you're lazy) "s/he."

HeiMantaHei In reply to GrammarshineHyena [2013-08-24 20:45:03 +0000 UTC]

-shrugs-  You have free will and the right to do what you want, but call me a "they" and I will bop you one.  If other gender-neutral people are okay with it, then you can use it on them.

It's a damn shame the 17th-century Latin-obsessed shut-ins who set up the rules for this absurd language didn't make a gender-neutral singular third-person pronoun...
