Description I decided to challenge myself to do a matte painting with only photos I've taken in Australia. Gotta be somewhere between 30 and 40 in there, I didn't start with a very good plate. I worked on it a couple weeks on and off, it was a pain at times considering I only have a Leica point and shoot, but I'm happy with it. Hope you like it!

Also, for those curious, photos used were primarily taken around Byron Bay, Mount Tamborine, and Stradbroke Island.Β

Great stuff, really captures what's unique about the Australian bush compared to other biomes. Only thing that makes it seem a little less Aussie is too many clouds in the sky

Be happy you're not over here at the moment. It's so hot that Stradbroke is actually on fire.

awesome matte painting but I would change one of the two trees in the middle facing one another. You can clearly tell they are mirrored and it catches the eye

Hmm....I had decided that this was most definitely Australia before I read the caption. Very happy to see that my guess was correct. Something magical that radiates from that place, and your creation is very reminiscent of some HD films I have seen of late, from both Australia and NZ.Β Β  Excellent work, btw, and well worth the time spent.

It's beautiful. This really looks like a real place somewhere. Β I'm wondering, though, how does matte painting differ from plain old digital painting? Β Are pieces of the photos you took still in this image, or did you paint over them? Β The result is astounding... I would not be able to guess that this started as 30 to 40 photos, it looks so seamless.

So you cut out pieces from your photos and ... collage them together, and then adjust light and dark areas with Dodge and Burn? Β Is that what you mean?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rahll In reply to YSLiao [2013-12-05 21:09:35 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I wish it were that easy, then it wouldn't take me 30 hours. Matte painting can be an incredibly complex process, it's not as simple as cutting a photo out and dodging and burning. In fact, I probably only used dodge and burn a couple of times in the entire process. They're destructive and generally don't yield the best results for big adjustments.Β

YSLiao In reply to Rahll [2013-12-06 02:31:22 +0000 UTC]

I've no idea what matt painting is. Β All this time I thought it's a very big digital painting with lots of photo-real details that are painted little by little, like the Mogao Caves.

Rahll In reply to YSLiao [2013-12-17 00:18:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there are a lot of misconceptions about it, but you can check out a couple of wikipedia articles on it if you're curious. You can probably find some more interesting stuff by Googling it though
