Oh I am so pleased I've finally finished this. I'm going to upload some screenshots in my scrap gallery to show you all how huge the original file of this is.I've been working on this picture on and off for the last few days, and it's eaten my brain. You know when you get a song stuck in your head and you can't get rid of it? That's basically why this has appeared.
All done in Open Canvas (as usual because I don't have much of anything else
), except for the initial line art which I took from some doodles in my sketchpad. I had hoped to do this on a large scale in real media, but I can't afford to right now. Oh well. I don't think I've ever worked so hard on a piece of digital art. I really, really enjoyed myself with this one. I hope you like it too.
Feedback would be most greatly appreciated.

Wow, that's amazing. I love the colors, the sky...everything. Somehow it reminds me of Fantasia...the part where Night on Bald Mountain is playing...you know, with the creepy demon/monster thingies. Only different. The swirly sky in this kicks much butt.

Yay for swirly skies. Night on Bald Mountain was always my favourite bit of Fantasia, save for the mushrooms doing their little dance. Which clearly pwnz everything else.

The little details really make this worth the full view~! 'the strings she says~ aiiiieee lookie at the strings' *points the lighting is really well done, and the subtle shading on the monkeys features are great~
plus the little buggers dead cute~!

I'm not quite sure where to start with this... the shading is extremely nice, I like how overly shadowed the monkey is, with the top lightsource. It looks especially interesting around his/her eyebrow area.
The wings... I love the details in the wings, all the little featherbits. And how the wings aren't all big and poofy-like; the way you did them works really well for the overall feel of this.
The fact that the stars are on strings as well as the wings, and the halo is just sort of attached like that. Definitely adds a nice bit of symbolism to it, and makes you think. (And I like how spiky the stars are, too, as an added little thing.)
You did a really good job with the swirls and flowyness of the sky, and how it just goes down to the earth and the angle you made THAT at... (I'm not sure the exact term, but how the planet seems to be curving away.. yeah. And I like the landmasses, too!)
But I especially like how most of the details are around the monkey and the sky above. The earth below balances it out, but doesn't distract from it, so kudos on the composition.

Urgh. Sorry for the shockingly late response to this most wonderful of comments; having been chucked in at the deep end of the University Pool, I'm somewhat without internet 99% of the time.

I adore your use of colour and lighting.. and the concept and composition of this is wonderful. I particularly like how you detailed the wingfeathers.. and that sky is so swirly and gorgeously painted. *favelove*

Hee! I love that song. We used to sing it in the playground - it's a clapping game (and that song's called The Clapping Song. It's been done by loads of people). I wish I had a recording of it, but all you seem to be able to get mp3-wise is the Aaron Carter rip off of it D:

I don't remember adding any comment on it in livejournal or on here, so....I love it. The only thing I might change is to brighten up the face just a smidge, since I think I remeber seeing more detail in your closeup.

Uhhmm as for favourite song ... depends on my mood. Although at the moment Winterlong is fairly high up, as are Head On, Velouria and Where is my Mind.

That is really, really creepy, but I think you did an excellent job of showing that he's going to Heaven while still portraying death. His arms and legs are so skinny it looks like he's decaying, and the wings look frayed and mossy/bonelike.
