I have looked through it, and I really like the direction that Su is taking; the heavy shadows are really working for his style and makes it more eye-catching. I really need to go out and buy it, I've heard that Prowl's attitude goes through some major changes, which will be interesting to see. ^_^

I've loved all of Su's IDW artwork, and I enjoy seeing him experiment. Honestly, I didn't think the Mignola-tasticism worked nearly as well the next time he did it, but at least the one issue was excellent.
Story-wise... eh. I don't know if you've been following Prowl's character development in IDW, but he'd been made really interesting at the end of All Hail Megatron. He saw himself as a lone voice of measured reason surrounded by gung-ho hero-types whose impulsive bravery was their undoing. He knew he couldn't convince them out of their ways, so he got more subversive: When Kup was rebuilt, Prowl secretly altered his brain so he would lead troops more like Prowl would lead them. It's unclear exactly how much control Prowl wielded over Kup, but even he knew he was crossing ethical lines. If you want an interesting exploration of Prowl's attitude, that's the issue to pick up.
Sadly, all Spotlight: Prowl did was push his character back towards the standard impulsive-hero mold. It was a classic case of IDW Not Getting It; when Mike Costa took over as writer, he wrote Prowl doing the spur-of-the-moment self-sacrificial stuff that Prowl had just been established as being vehemently against. Fans complained, and Spotlight: Prowl was released early in a publicly-acknowledged attempt to "fix" this. But while it smoothed over the contradiction, it completely missed the point: The fans didn't care so much about the simple fact that there had been a contradiction, as much as they cared that the previous characterization had been WAY more interesting and compelling than the new.
So... yeah. That's the deal with IDW Prowl. Good art in the Spotlight, though!

(sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on for a while!)
I haven't been keeping up with some of the more recent TF comics, so I haven't seen any of Su's new work, but I'll have to check that out. ^_^
I really liked how he was portrayed in All Hail Megatron,as well as how he was in previous IDW comics. In the earlier books, his classic no-nonsense "prick" image was done just right, and in All Hail Megatron we got to see more into what makes him tick. The whole series was great, and I have read the AHM: Coda issue you're talking about. He's almost on the scary side, but as you said, he acknowledged that he was indeed walking a very thin line between right and wrong.
That's really too bad about the Spolight issue, one thing that I've really liked about the IDW series is how much they've worked on characterization. Have you read any of the Dreamwave comics? I have one of the War Within volumes, but have yet to really get into it. X)

Luckily, Costa has basically stayed away from Prowl after the Spotlight, but Prowl HAS appeared in side-projects like Last Stand of the Wreckers and Infestation , and those writers have stuck with the morally-ambiguous angle.
I own the whole DW collection – in fact, I worked on them a little – but honestly I don't remember that much about them. They just didn't really stick in my head. I recall that the ongoing by "Brad Mick" (James McDonough) and Adam Patyk had some good dialogue with an ear for the characters' classic voices. But they spent too much time building up to Something Awesome and then failed to deliver because DW collapsed.

I just did some profile-art for the first couple of issues of the More than Meets the Eye series. They're actually on my website here , under "character art". I got in at the peak, when DW was paying its creators reliably, and they dropped me before things went south. Pretty ideal, in retrospect.
These are the issues I was thinking of for good characterization. Not only are the old characters written with what I think is their classic "voice," but it's got some fun stuff with Sunstorm and Jetfire. Just don't expect any plot resolution, of course...

Woah, that's some awesome work! I'm always excited to see Transformer artwork that manages to both create a complex body structure while also paying attention to giving the posture and expressions a lot of character and emotion; it can be tough to keep both in mind while drawing something as detailed as Transformers! It definitely sounds like you got the ideal cut from the DW scene, though I'm sure it was still a bummer that things went down as they did.
Thanks for the link and tips, I still plan on collecting the DW Generation One's even if they're not brought to a close; if I can get a good fill of well-done writing and dialogue, I'll be plenty happy ^_^

Thank you! It's funny... the original batch of artwork that MtMtE commissioned from the fanartist community didn't meet their approval, and when James McDonough took over as editor, he threw most of it out. He kept me on board because he liked the sense of character in my work (Doubleheader was one he referred to specifically), but in the end most of my pieces ended up getting replaced anyway, primarily with Don's stuff. McDonough and I had trouble communicating, and I felt burned as I would pick up new issues and keep seeing my characters redrawn with less personality and no particular increase in technical skill. (Or even, in my oh-so-humble opinion, less skill: Don had a tendency in those days to draw everyone with strangely warped proportions, like a mattress stood on end, which irked me because I knew that what he was replacing had been rendered better in that regard. In fact, I'd heard from another artist behind the scenes that Don didn't like doing profile art in the first place, which made the whole thing seem even more pointless.)
All along, I'd gotten a seat-of-their-pants vibe from DW, and when they stopped asking me for more art, I was happy to move on to other projects. Like I said, in retrospect I ended up getting off easy. It was a fine lesson in the dangers of letting one's hobby become one's job.

Sheesh... I've heard some horror stories from the comic industry, but having your work replaced by another artist?? That just seems unreal! I don't think I've ever heard any good reminicing when it comes to DW, it sounds like the whole thing ended with everyone (except, perhaps, a few certain fellahs who created the problems) getting burned. I just can't even imagine what that would be like, though, to be expecting to see your work in a published comic and find it missing--/replaced/, no less. I'm hoping for a career with IDW someday, idealy when I get finished with school (maybe even before then, I've heard a lot of artists start up while they're still getting their degrees). I've met a few guys from IDW, and they seem pretty content.
My heart really goes out to ya, and I don't even need to tell you how much talent you've got; all around, their loss. It's good to see that despite all that went down, you're still passionate and still draw Transformers

I have no idea how common or uncommon that kind of thing is throughout the industry. I mean, companies have the right to do or not do whatever they want with art once they get it, so I was disappointed but not outraged at their decision not to run most of my stuff. The strangest thing they ever did with regards to me was when they reprinted some comic pages that I had colored. Those pages had originally appeared in a DW "preview special" anthology , then they were reprinted in a War Within issue. The first time, I was properly credited, but the second time, I only got "special thanks," while the colors were just credited to "Dreamwave". I have no idea why that happened; maybe they would've had to pay me twice if they'd given me proper credit? It was just bizarre.
