If I didn't play ESO I'd so play Istaria. I played the 30 free trial days a few years back and loved it.

Is Istaria a good game? I've heard of it before its release but never got much into it.

It depends what kind of games you like. Istaria, especially if you play a biped, is very grindy and has no voice acting - everything's text boxes. The graphics aren't great by today's standards. It was made in 2004 and has had a few management issues that made it unable to become as good a game as it could but the current team of developers are very dedicated to making the game the best it can be. The community is generally very supporting and nice, I haven't ever seen someone insult someone else as a 'noob', at least on my server (Order). I personally like the gameplay. It's a tab-targeting system where you hit abilities on a hotkey to deal more damage with attacks beyond a general auto-attack.
It takes a lot of patience to get higher levels but it does reward you well in the end. As a dragon you can one-shot almost every single mob with your ability Gold Rage on its highest level except those that are named or have above-average HP, for example. You can also customize your dragon very well visually and somewhat well tactically by use of a Training Points system where you up your stats each level manually. You craft your own armor and spells with techniques to further customize your build. (Or ask others to do it)
It has a low population since it's such an old game but there are always at least 15 people around on Order, usually 20-30. Chaos, the normal server, has something like 80+ on average. Not sure it's low or high points though. I've played for a bit over 5 years now and haven't been able to part from it. I know people who have played since release 11 years ago!
