Description Tremorworks: Demongate High: Lung
Project for ~phoenixsamurai

The traditional Chinese dragon, or lung, is really a mish-mash of several different animals - it has the eyes of a rabbit, the ears of a cow, the antlers of a deer, the body of a snake, the scales of a carp, the paws of a tiger, and the talons of a hawk. You'd think such an amalgam would look ridiculous, but the Chinese have been drawing Really Cool Dragons for thousands of years based on all that jazz.

Wow! Amazing line art! It is so smoothly drawn that I thought it was digitally done at first You captured the features of the Chinese Lung very well. You must have a very steady hand

Keep up the good work!

Thank you!

I am not nearly so competent with a stylus and tablet... I'm still pretty old-fashioned when it comes to art. I like the feeling of drawing, and of making art out of a huge pile of little lines.

Your welcome

I agree, I'm still trying to figure out the digital art. If I had to choose, I'd pick drawing by hand rather than by tablet/digital. By the way, what kind of pen/marker did you use?

I use Zig Millenium pens and Micron pens for all of my black and white art.

Okay, thanks I've been looking for some good pens to use for line art so it's good to know. Thanks again!

Even the shaded version still looks kinda fluffy.

I see why you gave us a clean lineart... The shading does take up some coloring, doesn't it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to JadeThePredator [2010-04-26 21:09:34 +0000 UTC]

It kind of depends on the colorist. If you're feeding it through Photoshop or similar, the pre-existing shading isn't an issue. Comic book colorists deal with a great deal of black all the time and some colorists prefer it. Others want to work in the shading for themselves, maybe from a different angle than the one I always use. I just thought about it ahead of time, for once, and submitted both versions for people to play with if they want to.

Thanks very much. I tried to keep the traditional elements of the Chinese dragon in mind, and I was also thinking of the enamel on those ancient vases at my local art museum, as well.

Not so long as you'd think...

The illustration is only 6x9 inches, so the actual drawing is quite small. From pencil drawing to finished ink shading, it took about four hours.

and then the japanese, koreans and vietnamese copied the chinese culture.....

I mean no disrespect or anything....But I would prefer if they had used their own ideas rather than copy us....

LOL - I understand what you mean, but I suspect they used the ideas of the Chinese because they were IMPRESSED. Or the Chinese told the other people that their way was the RIGHT way to do it.

I also really like how you used the different features of the animals that is said to be mixed all together into the Chinese Dragon. I got a little dragon book as a kid where all those things stood.
