"Everything will be alright," Caesar said softly as he held his brother tight. The truth is he wasn't sure how things will turn out but he had to say something. Rex was sobbing hysterically a moment ago and so he grabs hold of the boy to calm him down. The boy was still crying, amidst a series of hiccups, in his embrace. There was a sad look in Caesar's eyes as the reality of it all dawned upon him.

'They're gone. They're not coming back. Now it's just me and Rex.' He held Rex tighter as if afraid he'll lose the boy too if he doesn't. He closes his eyes as he felt Rex's tiny arms wrap around his waist. It was getting harder to keep the tears in and one escaped from the corner of his eyes. He dipped his head lower to hide his face even though he knew there was no one else in the apartment. They stayed that way for a long time holding on to each other; crying the pain and shock away. In that moment, the world seemed a lot bigger and scarier than it ever was.

"Caesar," Rex muffled voice said, "I miss them already."

"I miss them too mijo."

More tears came as Rex said "Please don't go. Please don't leave me too. I'm scared."

Caesar tried to speak but choked on his words. He took a deep breath and said "I'm still here little brother. I'm not going anywhere. I won't leave you alone. I promise. Everything will be alright." He repeated that last line over and over again in his head forcing himself to believe those words. Those words kept him afloat because he knew that for things to be alright, they would need to get through that phase. They need to stand up and face harsh reality before them.
