400 years ago. Zeref then a genius student at a magic academy lost his younger brother Natsu (yes THAT Natsu) to an unknown cause. He then focused his entire life on trying to bring his little brother back to life. But for his attempts at violating the laws of nature he was cursed by the god of life and death with his death magic. When he cares about the value of life his magic will spontaneously lash out killing all around him. When he doesn't care about life he has control of his magic... but in that instance death is Zeref's goal. Further he was cursed with immortality. As such Zeref is cursed to live forever, causing death where ever he goes - whether he wants to or not  - for all eternity. The only thing good about this curse, at least in his opinion was it gave him time to perfect his resurrection magic and use it to bring Natsu back to life - as E.N.D - his strongest demon, fulfilling both his goal of saving his brother and finding a way he could die.
