Gotta love threat postures

Teehee... A secret? As much as it looks like he's telling me to back off in a static shot, he was actually begging for food. Whle he was swimming up and down the side of his tank begging, we shot this. If he were actually flaring at me, of course, he'd be static, his pectoral fins would be completely flared forward, and his venomous dorsal spines would be pointing directly at me.

But we cheated

He is young and very tame. The only time he actually flares is when I have forceps with food. I DO have an extremely bad-tempered black volitan at work who flares at anything that moves past his tank.

I solemnly swear to take real threat postures while feeding at some point

I'm a shark biologist, I'm used to exaggerated swimming, hunching, tight figure 8s and gaping. I wouldn't know a pectoral flare if it bit my leg off

I knew you did marine biology, but I didn't know sharks were your forte! *Drool* We have a Leopard Shark and two Smooth-hounds at work. They are incredible!

Triakis semifasciata and... aaaaaaand... dammit... Mustelus mustelus or ? Plain smooth or starry smooth?
Strictly my specialism is deep oceanic benthic scavengers like Coryphaenoides armatus and Barathrites iris (which I'm the only person ever to accoustically track), but sharks are my love. I'm a member of the Shark Trust and was made an honorary lifetime member of the Shark Conservation Society for drawing their calendar and Christmas cards for two years in a row and illustrating parts of a shark ID guide and DVD.

The grey smooth-hound, methinks (M. californicus).

And we come full-circle to 'every else's job sounds SO COOL!'. The researcher in me says '!!! Holy awesome on the tracking, Batman!' and the artist in me drools at the thought of drawing ID guides. So awesome!

Ah! West coast fish!
I didn't draw the guides, they got a serious pro in for that. I did the chapter headers for the book and illustrated an event for the DVD, but it was still kinda ace to be part of
The Deep oceanic tracking was kinda cool. I worked (amd did my Masters thesis) with these guys .

Gran... You're making me miss research! They have a page for their published papers, is your research among them?

I wish My work was never published. I used data a PhD student didn't want initially as my MSc thesis. She chose not to publish that branch of her work and so mine was never published either. I had a letter to Nature all lined up on it too. There is, however, an abstract of a conference lecture she gave somewhere online if you want me to find it for you.

Many thanks! I originally had the crop much tighter, but was told that I wasn't allowed to crop out any of his fins ^^
