Back in the day there was an awesome cartoon called Pirates of Dark Water. I remember watching it on ABC early Saturday morning when I was a tad younger. I also remember it being suddenly removed from the airwaves prior to the culmination of the story. I read a bit about it over on Wikipedia, apparently they stopped making the show altogether after 21 episodes--and according to the story only 8 of the 13 treasures were found. They even joked about it on one of those Cartoon Network fake commercials a couple of years back. This character is the property of Time Warner.

Well, I found some of the episodes online at YouTube, and I just felt like sketching up the main character, Prince Ren. And then to sharpen my coloring skills, I slapped some colors on it. I hope that it works. I was looking at the coloring technique of Christian Lichtner (of Ultimates 3 fame) and was going for that painterly feel. I know, everyone that's talked to me about coloring has told me to stay away from comic coloring as reference or inspiration and focus on film and photography to get the best representation of coloring for mood, lighting, and emotion.

I like this but I'm willing to re-do it with corrections and adjustments from some constructive feedback. Is the top layer of pure white highlight too much? Is there enough transition from the highlights to the flat to the shadows? Is the light source consistent? These are all questions that I asked myself as I was working on this.
