Description My second pencil drawing of Thor (Chris Hemsworth in Thor The Dark World). I don't know why but it was not fun to draw this portrait... Maybe because of the hair (... or maybe because it's not Loki...  )? Again I was a little bit lazy and rushed some details (like in the Iron Man drawing). I think I begin to like colour pencils more than normal pencils! It's somehow easier to draw with them!
Reference was a production still from the movie Thor The Dark World (2013).

Paper DIN A4 190g/m², Faber-Castell pencils (HB, 7B), 4-5h

I'm so terribly puzzled as to how to give depth to a drawing. What values to use, how to determine them... I can imagine the facial structure of a character, then comes the lightning and I lose the idea on what and where should be.

Just don't give up and keep on practicing! Practice makes perfekt. When you've drawn a few face you get a "feeling" for shadows.
By the way: Do you use different pencils for your drawings (not just HB)? Soft pencil for example 6B can help to get more contrast!
