I love this pic! However if you want to mess with it a bit more, the sniper rifle is out of perspective. The opening of the barrels should be rounder, since they almost totally face the camera, and you could experiment a bit with making the barrel drastically bigger as it is getting closer to the point of view.

Thanks. This is a very old picture, 3 years ago almost by now. It could probably stand to be redrawn sometime.

Looks good Sak, and nice lense flare! (flashbacks from the StarTrek movie blinding me every 5 seconds)
Lighting looks great. If you don't like washing out the colours so much you can tone down the orange or show it as a glare across just the edge of surfaces.

It's missing the "O" at the beginning ... thanks. Pencil drawings are the quickest and easiest I can turn out these days, so expect more.

Cool composition
Re the lighting here, I don't think this is as bad as you think it is. With the rimlights/highlights, I think the fuzzy brush/brushwork doesn't fit with the rest of this -- too digital, too gradient-y, too something that doesn't fit with the pencilly linework. Rather than go with low-opacity fuzzbrush over your lines and colors, which I think you did here, I'd suggest trying a hard brush (even if it's low opacity in multiple passes for some purposes) -- if you're definitive about your highlights and rimlights, you can suggest lines and details that can be left out of the shadows and stuff.
I also want to say you should think more about saturation along with your light/shade color choices, but that's sort of an instinctive suggestion and I couldn't really back it up with details as to why. I do think you should consider pushing your contrast higher -- with digital painting it's easy to wind up too close to the middle for highs vs lows.
Re the fire in that other page, I think you got the shapes just fine, but you left the lightness too constant -- try pushing the lightness of the flames' cores up, even to nearly white -- if you have an object that is white (against a suitably darker background) then you can rim it with another color, and it looks like the whole thing is the rim color, just that the middle part is giving off more light. (lightsabers are an example of this -- their cores are nearly white on the screen; it's their edges that are actually saturated at all). To make this play in a scene like that other piece, you have to push the lighting on stuff in the scene appropriately. Fire in a dark room makes for big contrasts between light and dark.

Thank you so much for the tips. I really struggle with lighting, so this definitely helps. I'll keep it in mind for sure, and probably go back and edit this at some point, too.

By the way, picking subject matter you supposedly aren't good at is the best way to improve yourself. Gives you practice, with a nice ragin' headache to go along with it, but you come out better in the end. No matter what you think, I still love this picture.

That's ironic because I suck at drawing science fiction settings and guns without at least a dozen references and hours of sketch-time under my belt ... but thanks.
