Ho-Oh's other official spelling (Houou) could work for a naming. And nice somebody else catches the stat deal!
(and that doesn't stop at it; Rayquaza was quite Mewtwo-like in RuSa, while Groudon and Kyogre had clear Ho-Oh and Lugia influences...)

Yup, making actual trios seemed like a better option than having to go with a random legend for the third version. Houou is the official romanization of the Japanese name (ăăŠăȘăŠ), as well as the Chinese phoenix.

I still don't get why they decided to spell it as Ho-Oh; it sounds the same way, but it just looks stupid. And Suicune being a version mascot was kind of an odd choice, but they didn't really have a different one...
