I don't know if you've seen this guy's commercials for Dos Equis beer. However, to me he REEKS of Gary Stu. Take this quote: "He once had an awkward moment... just to see what it feels like." The advice he gives had to have been written by someone who had one too many beers. The commercial's stupid really hurts my brain.

Thankfully, MAD did a parody of this,

Also known as:THE MOST UNINTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD!
Fact: He managed to smuggle Cuban cigars back to Cuba

Hey, that guy is hilarious.
I happen to think
He's the most epic Gary Stu ever.
And he should get an award for being so awesome.

I don't. He's just stupid and uninspiring.

Thing is, he's SUPPOSED to be like that. That's the whole point of the commercial. Nobody's actually taking it seriously, you know.

Plus, he doesn't even have a name. He's not a character, he's just a mascot.

The goal of an advertisement is to get people to buy that product. Frankly, there are a lot of people that are annoyed by such a character, and that will turn them off to buying the product.

I know, but he's supposed to be so perfect that we all know it's ridiculous, and then you laugh. They're using subtle humor. That's why it sticks with us.

Also, I don't think most consumers are going to be bothered. Just saying.

Well, we're just going to have to agree to disagree on that.

PS Gary Stu is the male version of a Mary Sue. If you don't know what that is, wiki it.

-_- I know what a Mary Sue is. I make several cases against them per month. I'm just saying, he's an intentional Gary Stu and therefore he's funny.

I don't think he's funny.

Good for you. I do, and so hundreds of other people. Why do you think the commercial still airs? Clearly it's working.

Or they just don't have any better ideas, or don't know when to quit beating a dead horse.

Here's what I think; I think you have a minuscule sense of humor. Plenty of people think he's funny, but just because you don't, that automatically makes it not funny? Sounds pretty stuck-up to me.

... So we can't have over the top characters? He doesn't even have a plot to "Gary Stu" around in.

A easy way to tell the difference between Normal and Stu/sue is that "The plot revolves around the protagonist, but the world revolves around a mary sue."

And I like those ads.
Just avoid the "Over the top = Mary sue" trap, please, it's an event horizon of criticism

Oh god... Captain, a large field of internet criticism has just appeared on our sensors. Dear god, it's too massive - we're getting sucked in!

Well, IMO he goes over the top here. The guy is always surrounded by sexy babes, and the advice he gives is treated as the gospel in the ads. I think a six-year-old could give better advice than that.

The only gospel /cough, I hear in it that...

1. He doesn't drink often.
2. He is too awesome for reality
3. When he DOES drink, he drinks THIS kind of whateversit.

The only part that really gets my goat about those commercials is the "Stay Thirsty" sign-off. If I wanted to do that, I wouldn't be looking for a Dos Equis, or any other beer (my preferences are more for Yuengling, Kirin Ichiban, Sapporo, and Sam Adams). As for the actor, he was once featured on Greg Gutfeld's roundtable show "Red Eye," and he's a funny, self-effacing guy nothing like his character in those commercials. But I'm of the same ultimate opinion as you re. those ads: Enough already, dammit! Nice work.

I honetsly don't know the point of these commercials. Are they supposed to be a play on Chuck Norris or something?

quamp In reply to KairiTheValeyard [2011-10-11 21:48:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't know. I think they're trying to make someone you're supposed to idolize. It's an if you ask me.
