Description Sooooo.  Interesting story about this picture...

While I was working on this (and various other pieces but I was mostly concerned for this) my hard drive failed on me.  It gave me more than fair warning though (I had been getting pop-ups about it for a week) so I had backed up all my stuff to an expansion drive.  I decided to simply try to use my Dad's computer.  Problem? USB devices didn't seem to work on his computer.  At all.  No expansion drive, no flash drives, not even my drawing tablet.  And even weirder, it wasn't that the computer wasn't detecting them, it just couldn't install them.  According to our friend who is a professional computer technician there was some error with windows or something.  We got things squared away, but still.  Isn't that weird?  Have you ever heard of something like that?

Anyway, as for the drawing itself, this is the result of partially wanting to practice drawing characters I haven't before (Rose, Winry, human Al, etc, etc) as well as a few I just haven't draw much (Greed, Gluttony, Lust, etc) and practicing drawing necks and shoulders.  Yes.  Necks and shoulders.

I also wanted to draw Rose.  Because people don't appreciate Rose. I mean, in the first anime she had an adorable color scheme (the brown skin and hair and the pink bangs make me think of chocolate and strawberries) and honestly her and Ed make a cute couple.  I'm probably going to be murdered by so many fangirls for saying this but in the first anime I liked them as a couple better than Ed and Winry.

Edvy's still my OTP though. *Pelted with rocks by fangirls.*

I was looking for this in the school library (I know they have it somewhere) but I couldn't find it... maybe I'll just have to go straight to the anime now 'cause thanks to you I'm downright interested in it. I'll make sure to tell ya if I like it.

While I do heavily recommend the manga since Arakawa is such an amazing writer, watching one of the anime adaptations (particularly "brotherhood") is probably the way to go anyway.  Brotherhood has absolutely gorgeous animation and both animes are well known for having some of the best English Dubs of all time.  Heck, the first anime had most child characters actually played by children.  Al's was voiced by Aron Dismuke in the first anime, who in my opinion is one of the most talented child voice actors I've ever heard.

Well, I managed to find the manga (finally!) and I've read the first volume, it's actually really good! I've got the next two now and I'm gonna read them when I have some free time. And a dubbed anime that's actually good? That's definitely worth watching, I'll make sure to get around to that sometime too.

Good! I'm glad you tracked it down!  Like I said, Arkawa is an amazing writer, as you'll soon see.
In all honestly I think the dub is better than the original.  There are one or two voices I liked better in Japanese, but for the most part almost every character's voice was perfect.  And since it's Funimation that means no stupid editing, censoring or rewriting.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it now! (The library practically hid it in their office... how was I supposed to know it was there ._.)
Yeah, that sounds about right. I know Funimation's Dragon Ball dub was really good, so I have no doubt about this one.

purplemagechan In reply to Misharoom [2014-05-05 00:00:45 +0000 UTC]

It was in the office?  Why and how? XD
Funimation is the biggest name in anime dubbing and while their not perfect by any stretch of the word, they at least are the best at what they do.  Mostly, their well known for never editing, changing or censoring their dubs, everything stays just as it was in Japanese.  The only blemish would be in the voice actors themselves and that depends heavily on the show. (And people's own taste)  I've seen some anime dubs by them that have legitimately awesome and talents voice actors that really fit the role they play and others that just sound awkward. But most of the time I hear a mix of both, most shows I see a few actors that are amazing and a few (or a bunch) that are just kind of "meh."

FMA has one of the best dubs, I can't really think of any of the voices in that, that were bad.  And example of a more mediocre one would be Kuroshitsuji's dub.  The main character's voice was absolutely awful, the secondary main character's voice was okay and then these two side characters (Greil and Madam Red) had awesome and very fitting voices.

I don't know to be honest XD (Interesting story - I went to grab the next volumes, but there were boxes in the way, and they're on a high shelf. And I'm really short, so I was reaching for them for ages. It took forever for me to grab them down XD)
I actually don't watch that much dubbed anime, but I guess I'm gonna have to look for more of Funimation's stuff. I remember when I was a kid though, and they had Pokemon and One Piece and stuff on TV but they were all edited, usually by 4Kids or someone so I kinda avoided dubbed anime since then.
I have never heard of Kuroshitsuji before. *looks it up right now* Whoop, it's the Japanese name for Black Butler XD I've never actually watched it though (I read the first volume of the manga once, but I didn't have much time so I didn't get to read enough of it to determine if I like it or not). But, that's an interesting story about the dub of it.

Pulled a real Edward there.  XD

Yeah, 4kids is infamous for how bad their dubs are.  Most old dubs from the 90s were like that.  But now-a-days since anime has become more mainstream/popular (especially with teens and young adults) more dubbing companies try to stay true to the source material. Now the usual problems with dubs isn't whether they'll be horribly censored and chopped up but whether or not the voices are going to be any good.

I prefer calling it Kuroshitsuji because Black Butler is such an awkward title.  I know that's what it literally translates to but it makes it sound like "African American Butler" rather than "Butler that wears black." They should have titled it "Butler IN Black" instead.  Anyway, it's a good series.  The anime has gorgeous animation and has just the right mix of Victorian historical fiction and fantasy, with even a bit of religious commentary.  Just watch the first season, it has such a well written and ambiguous ending.  Very satisfying.  And then they go and screw it up in the second season by ruining the awesome ending they had going for them and then just going all fanservice and pandering on us.  Though the second season does have Alois Trancy.  It has that going for it at least.  The manga has a similar problem, after the circus arch it just starts going in weird places.

To be honest, I've been a lot more selfconscious about my height since then XD
I've noticed that, a lot of the dubbed anime I've seen lately has been like that, they've kept all the original stuff intact, like their names and the jokes about calling each other by their first name and stuff. A lot of the voices have been rather fitting too.
I never really thought about it like that, but I'll probably never remember it's called Kurokitsuji. I'll make sure to take a look into it. And that happens with a lot of good anime - you'll enjoy it, and then they'll go and make a terrible sequel that makes you wanna pull your hair out. Like the Madoka movie Rebellion. That was absolutely terrible. And the worst part is it's not just anime - anything from TV shows to video games have this sort of thing happen to them all the time.

purplemagechan In reply to Misharoom [2014-05-18 04:30:05 +0000 UTC]

Yep, like I said that's how they do it now a days.  Or at least most do.  There's been a handful that have been butchered even recently, either because they were picked up by a terrible English dubbing company (like 4Kids.  Though I think 4Kids is bankrupt now.  Good residence.) or because the material was too inappropriate, even for mature American audiences.  (I know Dance in the Vampire Bund had to be chopped up quite a bit because of naked loli vampires.  That may fly in Japan but not here.  Which I'm personally glad for, since naked loli vampires are disturbing.)

I agree whole heartedly.  But I'm curious, why do you hate Rebellion?  I thought it was pretty good.  If nothing else it was splendidly animated (I drooled over it.  At lot. ) And the alternate world thing was fascinating at least.  Though I will say I have no idea how to react to the ending.  It took me completely off guard.

Misharoom In reply to purplemagechan [2014-05-19 12:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm glad 4Kids is out of business. The world needs less dubbing companies like that. I have never heard of Dance in the Vampire Bund before now, and the way you've described it I don't think I'm gonna be watching it anytime soon.
Well... Rebellion is a mixed opinion to me. I know a lot of people who hate it, and I sorta do. I mean, I enjoyed the start and stuff (yay for the Holy Quintet, that was awesome), but when Kyubey comes along and Homura turns into a witch and stuff, I kinda lost track of what was going on, and then Homura becomes a demon and takes Madoka for herself and is all selfish about love and stuff and I just lost it. And somehow Sayaka knows everything when nobody else does, and they don't explain the rest of it. I did think a few aspects of the movie were good though, like the animation as you said, and then there was that epic fight scene with Mami and Homura, and a few other things. I think they better tie it off with a killer sequel movie that fixes everything or I'm just gonna forget it exists and not count is as canon as a lot of people are doing right now. Though I guess the chance of a sequel movie might not be all that high. (Did you know about the custom movie tickets they made for the movie?)

purplemagechan In reply to Misharoom [2014-05-20 18:26:36 +0000 UTC]

Good ridence, indeed.  The world is a better place without 4Kids.
I've never seen Dance in the Vampire Bund myself, for those same reasons, I've just heard of the controversies it brought when it was localized.  The main problem with it is that those sort of animes should probably never be localized in the first place.  Yes, we understand that it's legal in Japan for a 13 year old to have sex or whatever, but it's NOT legal in most other countries.  So those sort of animes should really just stay in their home land lest they want to cause controversy and outrage.  I've seen many people argue that "you should respect other cultures." I normally do.  But pedophilia is pedophilia.

I loved the cake song bit.  And that whole opening with the quilt-stitched background.  Everyone seems to love that Mami and Homura fight scene but I think my favorite scene was actually the fight between Sayaka and Homura with all those nice water effects.  That and while it was a bit confusing, I liked that Sayaka seems to know more than the others.  I think it has to do with her being a witch.  I'm not sure if she was a witch the whole time and was just able to hide it somehow or if the way witches work is different in Homura's alternate reality.

Oh right and that was the part that was really interesting to me.  The fact that Homura has reshaped the world to her whims.  And it provided an interesting look in on her psyche. It reminds me of the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.  In case you haven't seen that movie/read the novel I won't say anymore.  Her choice in the end to go all yandere on Madoka IS really sick and selfish, don't get me wrong.  But it makes sense based on her character.  As we've seen from the original series, she considers Madoka her only friend and when she starts failing over and over to save the magical girls she than decides to simply focus on saving Madoka, and no one else, because she's the only person she cares about.  I assume this soon grew into a really sick obsessive love that turned her into the literal witch she is.

Misharoom In reply to purplemagechan [2014-05-23 13:02:38 +0000 UTC]

I see what you mean about localising that kind of stuff, it wouldn't really be easy to keep everything intact while making it appropriate for audiences over here who aren't exposed to this stuff on a daily basis. They really should just keep it all over there and if by any odd chance someone over here wants to see it, just look it up online or something. That's what I think they should do anyway.
Yeah, the cake part at the start was awesome. I can't really say I remember the fight between Sayaka and Homura though. And I'd say that Sayaka being a witch most probably had something to do with it.
No, I haven't seen it. But that is an interesting point you bring up. I know her sole purpose was to save Madoka, and you're right about the obsessive love thing, but what does that really say about Homura though? Was she always fated to end up like this? Or was something interfering with her life that led to her becoming obsessed over being with Madoka? I mean, you'd think the end of the original series, where she was fighting off those demon things and keeping Madoka's memory alive, was fine, right? The fact that she ended up as a selfish demon planning to keep Madoka all to herself really just ruins the fact she was trying to save her all this time.

That reminds me, back in the day some dubbing companies, especially 4Kids, liked to remove any ounce of foreign culture from animes and games.  The story is set in Japan?  Well now it's set in America.  The main character's name is Ichigo?  Well, now her name is Zoey.  The onigiri she's eating?  Totally a doughnut.  That trip they take in that one episode to Tokyo Tower?  They were going to a radio tower. Obviously.

That was outright offensive to the Japanese and every other culture. It's like they thought Americans don't care about any other culture but our own---

Oh wait, most of us don't.

I know, that was fascinating.  I mean, it's horrible for her character, but's it's honestly fascinating to watch her degrade like that and wonder if this was truly her fate. To wonder what brought her to this.

Misharoom In reply to purplemagechan [2014-06-07 12:52:31 +0000 UTC]

That's really almost like saying 'we don't want anything to be the same as the original, so we're gonna totally ruin it to make it seem American!' It's no wonder nobody likes those old companies. It's just like taking someone's artwork and changing everything in it and claiming it as your own. (Ichigo to Zoey, are you talking about Tokyo Mew Mew there?)
Yeah, that was probably the only thing that I found weird about the movie, because it makes you think if they were gonna make her like that from the beginning. (btw I finished reading Fullmetal Alchemist and it was really awesome! Now on to the anime XD)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

purplemagechan In reply to Misharoom [2014-06-07 14:21:16 +0000 UTC]

I know, that's so horrible.  I almost hate to say this, but I'm glad they went bankrupt. Yes, that was a reference to Tokyo Mew Mew, which got dubbed over here as "Mew Mew Power." Though I made reference to quite a few old anime dubs, the Tokyo Tower-Radio Tower was from the Card Captor Sakura dub (which got dubbed as "Card Captors" God forbid kids hear a foreign word/name in the title) and the rice ball-doughnut thing was from Pokemon.

If your going right off the manga I'd recommended you watch FMA: Brotherhood, since that one's adapted directly off the manga.  2003's FMA kind of trails off once they run out of source material.  I mean, it's sort of interesting in it's own right but the ending is terrible in comparison to the manga/brotherhood.

Misharoom In reply to purplemagechan [2014-06-21 13:02:07 +0000 UTC]

I thought it was, I kinda grew up watching 'Mew Mew Power' but I've long since switched to the original. I still haven't seen Card Captor Sakura yet but I hear it's really good, I think the reason I didn't watch it was because I saw the first dubbed episode and didn't really like it much. (No wonder.) I haven't really watched much of Pokemon to be honest, I always used to think Ash was stupid. And he never ages. Ever.
Alright, I'll skip straight to Brotherhood then ^^

purplemagechan In reply to Misharoom [2014-06-21 16:38:20 +0000 UTC]

Cardcaptor Sakura is actually my all time favorite anime.  I realize it's not as big or epic as FMA, PMMM, SNK, etc, etc, but it's simplicity, adorableness and pure heart and nostalgia have made it one of the few animes I can just watch over and over again and never get tired of.  The original Japanese one, that is, the English dub sucked biiiiiiiig time.  Like, among the worst dubs I've ever seen.  They changed all the soft cute background music into generic, rock/pop music and all the characters who once had soft, cute honestly surprisingly accurate child voices now sound like stupid, stuck-up teenage valley girls.  They even talk like it too.  Not to mention the butchering of all the character's relationships because God forbid there be romance in this shojou anime.

Misharoom In reply to purplemagechan [2014-06-22 00:36:38 +0000 UTC]

My gosh, you just made me want to start watching the show again. The original one, of course. Definitely won't be going for the dub again. (This was a long time ago when I didn't like subbed anime that I watched the first dubbed episode.) Also what's SNK? I'm not really the greatest with acronyms...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

purplemagechan In reply to Misharoom [2014-06-22 03:19:18 +0000 UTC]

I watched the dub on American TV when I was a little girl.  And at the time I was too young to know the difference.  Oh, SNK is actually Attack on Titan, it's just the acronym for the Japanese title (Er, something like Shynkeki no Kyoji, I think?) I just know that's the acronym most fans use to refer to the show.  Just like how Fullmetal Alchemist fans use FMA.  Or Madoka fans use PMMM.

Misharoom In reply to purplemagechan [2014-06-24 12:47:51 +0000 UTC]

That's the reason I liked dubs like Mew Mew Power as a kid. Oh, I get ya now. Shingeki no Kyojin. I just never really knew it was referred to as SNK. Though that's probably because I've never actually seen the show myself but I have been meaning to.

The Original anime is really hard to come by these days.  It's like after Brotherhood Funimation wanted to sweep the first anime under the rug.  I had to look it up on netflix to watch it.
The first anime has it's good points, (they added/changed a lot of details about the homunculi and I honestly thought a lot of it was really creative) but overall brotherhood/the manga is a million times better. (Mostly just because Arakawa is such a good writer.)
