Wow, she's really beautiful! I wonder if it's not a touch blood magic...?
Attractiveness + blood magic = A dangerous combination!

I'd love to learn how to use charcoal like this. My attempts have resulted in smudgy disasters, but this is really nice.

The best advice I can give is to keep practicing, draw lightly and work through the smudge. It's not unusual for my drawings to take on a smudgy look, although I try to redefine the main areas lightly after each time I blend. Work the general areas first to get in the values. Blend the areas with a tissue and lay down more charcoal. Expect most of your charcoal to come off with each wipe. Keep doing this until you are satisfied. Detail comes much, much later in a drawing -- or at least it does for me Charcoal is forgiving, so even when you think you have a mess on your hands, you still might be able to salvage the piece, as long as you did not draw too dark. You have no idea how many times I wanted to toss a piece, only to keep on working it until it came out OK. You might try charcoal pencils, at least until you start to get the hang of it.

Oh, and make sure you get some good charcoal paper!

Good luck!

Charcoal is pretty cool, especially vine charcoal. It imitates the feel of painting; you can push it all around.
