Description I've been saying this for the nth time but I'm just a huge fan of Pokemon during the Johto Era especially Pokemon Crystal. Needless to say, it doesn't seem obvious because my first retail bought game was Pokemon Emerald and there's a short behind the scenes of why this happened. Back when Gen 2 rose in popularity, I lived life as an average kid without access to huge sums of money or any of that sort. I remember my parents brought me to a bookstore way back and I stumbled upon this "Scholastic" brand Johto book which title I could never for the life of me remember, and it contained a small poster of the Johto dex (funny story it didn't even have all the johto mons there which was a huge letdown). Posters have been scarce where I live and this awesome addition to my collection only fueled my obsession to collecting more.

I spent majority of my life watching neighbors playing TCG and at the time, I was able to afford the base set alongside my siblings, and because the artworks were so much fun to collect, I got my hands on the first few NEO series themed decks and a couple of booster packs, nothing special. I admit, I was more of a collector than a battler because some ugly things happened, one being my neighbors cheating during coin flips which had me rolling eyes for days on end, and the other was that the scrub old me felt that it was just too complicated and for the most part expensive to get my hands on stashes of booster packs to come up with even a decent deck.

Second exposure to Johto was when we met our cousin's friend who brought his atomic purple GBC to a reunion complete with the timeless wormlight and as you guessed it, contained a copy of Pokemon. I can't make heads or tails if it was Silver or Gold, but I feel like it wasn't Crystal. I beamed at his console enviously as his eyes were glued to the screen, and we spent the rest of the day watching him play his game. To me, I don't think there are other handhelds that could rival the minimalist and ergonomic design that the color captures. It feels just right on the hands, and unlike its predecessor, it wasn't limited to a single color nor was it too vibrant to the eyes. I still couldn't forget about his purple gameboy color, that was the first and last time I saw one during my childhood years.

Fast forward, when I landed my first job, I reminisced the experience when I found the VC release of GS and later Crystal. Being the avid collector that I was, I sought to invest in a gameboy color of my own. I went the extra mile to invest on a replacement shell and followed a tutorial on how to replace it, and now it looks like a brand new one (unless we do a teardown of course). I still have it to this day albeit it's been left untouched for a while already because my fondness (driven by my curiosity for glitches) dwindled. I just didn't have any inclination to relearn the process of doing glitches at this point in time, and the advent of many other titles have pulled me from the charm of this nostalgic treasure. Still, I might rekindle my passion for this beloved console once again if I could get my hands on a GBA SP to trade mons with.

Enough of me rambling, the star of the show Raikou might seem like an obvious choice because I recently did Latias. I chose a charging pose because I felt like it suits its impeccable design. To be honest, the pose is based off of Suicune's Crystal box art, and since there are no counterparts of it for Raikou and Entei, I made one. As of now, I'm not sure if I'll be planning to do Entei next or make my own version of Suicune. Personally, its design seem to strike a balance of coolness and stubbiness, with the cloud-like mane and the bolt-like tail to support the former, and the head being round to support the latter.

I really like how you've reconstructed the watercolor effect! Thanks for sharing your personal Johto experience too. I remember first officially learning about gen 2 on the old Pojo.com Pokemon site. All these strange sprites with bright colors and Japanese names. I was hooked! When I finally got the game I played it all the way from 3rd grade through high school

I appreciate it Pojo rings a bell, I feel like from countless searches, I've stumbled upon that site at some point! I'm a sucker for bright colored sprites and when crystal revealed the animations, I couldn't stop playing. That was a long time! Thanks for sharing me yours, I commend your dedication

Raikou's expression when you've encountered him 34 times and have failed to capture him in spite of the countless Sleep, Frozen, and Paralysis statuses you've inflicted him with.
