How do you go about shaving for the lighter areas?
(I may use this technique next year, we'll see. I'm still happy with cutting out...)

I use a lino tool (called a speedball). Wood carving gouges work well too.

Cool! I was wondering, how do you get some areas to glow lighter or darker than others? Is it just a matter of how deep you shave in to the pumpkin?

Yep, and the area around the right eye (his left) is actually cut out. It was supposed to look like his eye glass thingie, but it didn't really turn out that way.

Okay, cool. Thanks for all the tips and stuff, they're very helpful I apreciate them a lot. And when I first saw it, I thought that the cut out spot looked like his monocle (the eye glass thingie )
