d bones are basically bones (usually in the legs of a model) that allow the legs to be posed as if the ik bones were turned off - as in, without the constraints of the ik bones.

tda append miku has them - they are little blue circles at the joints of the model (hip, knee, and ankle) that can be selected by double-clicking the bone
they're quite useful when doing action poses where ik bones are more difficult to get right, and since you can register them, you don't have to worry about making sure the ik bones are turned off if you accidentally change the frame !
