Description
"Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, 'Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?" James 2:15-16 (NIV)
I've been thinking about this verse a lot, about balancing prayer and well-wishes with real action. Every so often I encounter this mindset within the church that if someone has a need we'll just pray for them and "put it in God's hands," which sounds good and biblical, but once you start talking about ways to actually pool resources and fill that need, those same people just kind of go "meh." Or they accuse you of not having enough faith that the need will get filled some other way, or they start questioning the validity of the need and whether the recipient is truly deserving or not. Again it's not something I see a lot, but there are bits of it here and there. It kind of saddens me and makes me self-conscious about my desire to help.
