well, I know you posted this ages ago, but I wanted to comment anyway. The comments previous to mine are spot-on....especially the one by Grthink. I wanted to tell you my very first impression of it, when I saw it as a thumbnail before I full viewed. I knew it was going to have some sick details, but on occasion, I like to look at a piece as a thumbnail first anyway, as if I were taking a step back...to soak it in a bit. This piece struck me, as a whole, to be as if I were looking straight up at the sky in the midst of skyscrapers in a big city. I really liked this effect. Then I full viewed...wow. Incredible detail! This is really something to look at...for a long time. I can appreciate the effort this took to make, and you did a great job making a sort of ...illustrated commentary? Everything there tells a story. I see others trying a similar technique, but their main mistakes are always the same...they don't make the details in their pieces relate to one another....they are random. This may appear intimidating and random, but on closer inspection it is quite the opposite. Well done!

Is it scanned in wrong, or is that an effect you did?

the scanner I was using (back then) had its contrast settings up much too high, so the outlines are more solid then they should be, and the backround is lighter, its also smudged some of the work up

Oh man...just looked at this again -- kinda 'sat back' from it. Those black shapes I was complaining about all those months ago -- it's the white one's I should have been picking up, right? They're what's in the foreground. So there's a tunnelling effect...
Sorry, my work's so 2D I didn't think to look 'back' into the picture.
Apologies.
(Then again, I could be wrong now...in which case I'm even sorrier).

There's also a lot to look at, and it's easy to get lost in the piles upon piles of different, quirky details. This would be great as a poster for kids, I'm thinking. I'd just like to full-view it and stare at it for a while - but since I'm in a History class and meant to be working on a huge assignment, I'll abstain for now. Another good thing - you haven't left any awkward smudges or gaps in the midst of the details, or drawn over anything. There are some smudges and sketchy lines here and there, and I'd reccomend editing those out with Photoshop, but other than that it's great. I think if you went into a bit more shading, etc, you could end up like Anthony Browne, with the quirks that his paintings have.

Superb detail. I particularly like the melting heart, and the checkered/striped patterns everywhere make for quite a bit of intrigue. Great stuff, keep it up

So much to comment on here -- I was thinking of a lot of stuff as the full-view loaded up. But it was well worth waiting for the full-view. Before it loaded up the only thing I could really pick out was the scratchy quality of that massive black object which rises from the centre out to the top-left, and was worried you'd lost someof your famous style -- luckily, I was well off. I really like your graffity-style of drawing objects, the clearest example being the buildings in the bottom centre. Okay, never-mind that, I'll break down my thoughts into bullet-points, because as I said, got a lot to say.
(+) The compositon looks to me (and correct me if I'm wrong) like a landfill site, with the two sections in the corners being huge piles of society's detritus, but there's also a lot of movement in the two 'piles', making it more of a metaphorical or symbolic landfill.
(+) I really like the female figure in black ink moving upwards tword the angel statue in the blue 'pile' -- the differences in inks makes it work really well aesthetically, and it also increases the sene of movement in the picture.
(+) There are a lot of images of death in there -- skulls, gravestones, the big ol' bleeding heart, the gask mask etc but these are balanced out by the flowers, hearts and stars, so there's a constant swing of mood in the picture.
(+) No upside-down cross in this one, but plenty of right-side up ones. Something changed? Or did you decide to leave it out? Or, as I have done many times with similar projects, did you just forget?
(+) Other than the little flowers, the other major organic movement comes from the tentacle things, most notably behind the bleeding heart -- but instead of going against the feeling of doom, they actually add to it. Nice.
(+)Okay, there's plenty more I could point out, that I won't discuss because you probably know it all anyway, but here's a quick run-through of the other stuff I would have commented on -- Money, bleeding heart, checker boards (including the breaking one), phrasing, music (band names, allusions to punk), fighting bunny, feeling of drowning (hand reaching out in black section), fire at bottom of picture.
Hopefully my comments are appreciated...I've mostly stated the obvious, but something like this deserves reading properly.
Excellent. One critiscism -- I would have been tempted to do something with the large white portions in the background, and I'd also take the time to completely black out the scratchy bit (time consuming I know, but I can't help feeling that it detracts from the picture). Word to your mother.
