My head canon is that Soarin met Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash before he became a Wonderbolt. It would explain why Fluttershy also cared about him as well as Rainbow Dash in the episode Rainbow Falls and also how Spitfire knew Rainbow Dash grew up in Cloudsdale. I do think he's at least 5 years older than RD and Flutters though since I'm assuming he's been a Wonderbolt for awhile and has had much more experience.
