Description I traced the basic shape of the chest from a 200% resized sprite to keep him in scale with other G.A. characters but the rest was done from scratch. This is meant to echo that pose from his pencil sketch seen in the arcade version of Golden Axe. You can find a 'rogress animation' on the gallery page on my site:

I used to think that "Death Adder" meant he added death to....something. ย I had no idea that "adder" was a type of snake.

there should be an HD remake of this game put up on Xbox live (or any live too) where the sprites are "new and cool" like this- but still keep the originality

btw- this is friggin sweet!

I'd like to see a 2-D remake of it, but I'd even settle for a well-done 3-D remake that didn't mess up the basics of the formula. The 3-D Ages remake just got so much of it wrong. The clear answer is to make multiple clones of the WayForward crew and have them remake all the classic games.

I'm glad you like the sprite, too!

yeah i played that remake game and i was beyond disappointed- it didn't feel like goldenaxe at all... but yeah the sprite is really cool- i could it see a goldenaxe re made looking like that would be sweet!

This version of Death = Adder has never looked so good! Your redesigned version & his pose from the arcade coin op pencil rough is fantastic!!!

Thanks! The later version of D.A. is cool, but I needed a D.A. from the first game to fit in with the sprites and sprite edits I'd made of the original three heroes. That great sketch from the game seemed like something perfect to reference in the sprite.

I'll always love the designs for this game. It's like playing a Frank Frazetta or Boris Vallejo painting or the side of a really cool van.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PrimeOp In reply to Garrison-Kelly [2012-01-04 00:51:55 +0000 UTC]

Frank Frazetta was a great fantasy artist and some of the designs, especially Death Adder, were inspired by his art. Here's an unofficial website (though it has warnings about nakedness in some sections, the "Introduction" page is safe:
Introduction:

Boris Vallejo paints the same kinds of art but also painted some superhero and video game art as well. He even painted the cover for Golden Axe 2! He has a site with Julie Bell and here's a link to that one, too:

ZiR1402 [2010-05-19 21:53:49 +0000 UTC]

Actually, Golden Axe 1 in arcades is sort of the same, but in Sega Genesis the game has some more stages.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PrimeOp In reply to ZiR1402 [2010-05-20 04:33:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they added the final stage with the shadow bad guys and last fight with Death Bringer. It was a good idea because the arcade game would've been too short for a cartridge.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

ZiR1402 [2010-03-07 13:39:16 +0000 UTC]

What a great conversion you made. I remember the hours I took playing Golden Axe in arcades house (Fliperama in Brazil). So much money spent, but it was so much fun.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PrimeOp In reply to ZiR1402 [2010-05-19 19:03:06 +0000 UTC]

I never got to play Golden Axe in the arcades but it was the first Genesis game I bought along with Altered Beast. I played that game so, so much and still love playing it.

JaeDub003 In reply to PrimeOp [2012-03-06 09:05:04 +0000 UTC]

Golden Axe on XBox 360 Arcade is an arcade perfect translaton of Golden Axe from the coin operated machines. I been a fan since it was in the arcades. It's much better than Genesis version because the enemies have attacks, animations, details, & overall graphics that didn't appear in the cartridge. But the cartridge did have 2 extra levels & the Death Bringer character... Still isn't a substitute in my opinion of the arcade which was just a better experience. Though compared with today's games it is beaten in about a half hour without much effort on normal.

PrimeOp In reply to JaeDub003 [2012-03-12 06:01:01 +0000 UTC]

I think I like the player control in the Genesis/Mega Drive port a bit more than the arcade version. There was also less of an invisible barrier on the sides of the screen, but maybe they did something about that on the 360 port. I still love the arcade version, too. I beat the home port on the day that I bought it, but it took me a long time to get tired of it.

Truth! The fact that he'd knock you down then hit you with magic was just cold-blooded.

Yeah and if it wasn't R.bear it was Abadede that got on my nerves too.
You know, the guy that looked like a rip off of the ultimate warrior?
He had that stupid dash uppercut that would nail me in the chin every time I was trying to fill him out.

You know it, holmes!

The ScrollBoss site updates of December were all about how bad-ass 1989 was (Golden Axe, Final Fight, TMNT arcade, River City Ransom, Revenge of Shinobi, etc.) and Death Adder was one of my favorite bad guys.

I thought his armor was pink too until I looked closer at the arcade sprite. He's actually got some kind of ill wine red color on his armor. But even the pinker Genesis version was scary!

"Fear my bare legs and codpiece"

Speaking of which, just recently found the hard copy of Golden Axe and bought it.

...still not beaten though.

Great work.

PrimeOp In reply to AgentAquaM [2010-01-03 21:35:23 +0000 UTC]

Quick tips: zone the enemies in a way that they're away from each other. Use running attacks (except for Ax-Battler's shoulder charge with the crappy range) to knock them to separate sides of the screen. Try to keep enemies on higher ground so you can hack at their shins (especially on the giant bird stage). Do a running jump then hit the sword button and you'll do a downward sword thrust. It does insane damage but you have to trick the enemies into not moving or time it so that it hits a rising enemy before they can move out of the way.
