Brilliant tones in this - those deep shadows in the black rock, the fine structures of the mountains, the highlights in the snow, all in a grand, sweeping whole. This would look good at poster size.
It reminds me of the work of Ansel Adams. You may find some of his techniques useful - rdungan1918 has a couple of posts on Adam's books and work.

Mountains are so impressive especially above the tree line. How high are you here?

preethi524 In reply to xs-deviant [2016-06-20 07:18:22 +0000 UTC]

This was between Chang-La and Pangong.. Chang-La is at an altitude of  5,360 m or 17,590 ft ("second highest motorable road in the world").. and Pangong at an altitude of  4,250 m or 13,940 ft..

Oh yes, the terrain was almost confusing!!   Like in this one: fav.me/da351jm Snow mountains & smaller ones with vegetation!!

It was high enough that some of us ran out of oxygen & had to stop at army camps for a quick refill!!

Lol I never been above 2000m and to be honest, above the treeline I don't think it matters much anymore unless you are a mountaineer.

I live at around a 1000 m altitude.. This was the first time I was going to such high altitudes!! The views were spectacular!! We were going through roads carved around the Himalayas!    It was nothing close to the ~2000 m altitude hill stations I have visited in India (like Kulu, Manali, Ooty, Kodaikanal etc).. Not sure of how it's in any other country though!!

Well the higherst I lived was 400 meters. But what I mean is that above the treeline everything even when exiting in it self soon becomes a desert of stone and scarse plants. I think the weather and the views indeed make up up for it. Especially if you are lucky and get above the clouds. I love small mountain villages just sticking out of the clouds as if they resting on it.

It is, In Portugal you can camp free and there are many forgotten municipal picnic sites. I found one with a small well coming from the rock and almost 240degrees view. I used to camp there every now and then in summer and enjoy the solitude. In the morning that sometimes was my view.

Its amazing although even there the light solution is there. The university of Coimbra had 2 observatories on top of the mountain 2000m and had to stop. Just wasn't worth it any more. Ever seen Europe at night from space? blogs.ft.com/photo-diary/files…

Observatories are beautiful places to spend the night.. for the night sky!! I have been to one in India (Kavalur).. Hoping to someday go to the one in Hanle..

Light pollution is quite bad here too!! Took me so many years to finally see the Milky Way!!

Stunning black and white. The light and shadow are superb, and I love the overall composition. And, yes, the contrast of the boulder in front and the towering mountains behind is what makes the shot.
Blessings,
Steve

Woah!    Thank you so much!   The little boulder added character to it!

This was on the way to Pangong.. the mountains there changed in texture and colour every few kilometers! There were soft & smooth ones with striations like the one above.. very rocky black ones with snow & smaller green ones made of mud with vegetation! In some places, you could see the different type of mountains  one behind the other in layers!!
