I also find the eyes to be more expressive in the pencil version. Maybe because it haven't to dispute with the hair. If you add a darker stroke in the bottom of the eye (along with the eyelashes) you might be able to separate the eye from the face, then it might get our attention back.
Very beautiful job, anyway. In both versions.
