Another uncensored version of a page from Black PantherActually absolute no one can smoke on Marvel universe, even mobsters from the 30´s, and I had to remove the cigar from the hand of this character on some pages...
I can understand why they don´t want their main characters somoking, but, nobody? Even bad people? They want more "real sense" on actual comics, but suddenly the characters live on a world were smoking doesn´t exist... I don´t understand it...
I must say I grew up on a world were the people on comics, tv or movies were allowed to smoke... and I DON´T SMOKE, I never had the wish to smoke because Wolverine, the Thing or Nick Fury smoked...

I think that you're right pointing that bad guys should be allowed to smoke because... well, 'cos they're the bad ones and smoking makes them more hateful, and because as you said, a realistic world needs some smoking jerks to be believable...

From a marketing stand point, it makes sense. There's been a lot more interest in Marvel over the years, thanks to the brand expanding, so a stable company image, where panels can be reused in moving media (Ela opening credits), online, toy packaging and ads, is good to shoot for. It's an investment. I think Joe Quesada mostly came up with this ban on smoking, because I think I remember Wolverine used to smoke a lot before Joe Q came on board.
You know, though, that's the perfect world. If it were up to me, I'd put all smokers in jail or create a strain of tobacco that can be shot up like heroin. That way, smokers don't cause a negative effect on the world and people around them. Every time a friend lights up in front of me, my blood just boils, because second hand smoke damages my system more than it does the person inhaling it first hand. One day, I'll lose it and blow my top and shout my mouth off at them...
