Description I've been wanting to work on another Samus fanart piece for a while, and finally found the time to whip something up!

When I played Metroid and Super Metroid, I always viewed Samus as a hardass. Someone with a no-BS, somewhat military-esque attitude. After the more recent titles in the series, I'm not sure Nintendo had that in mind for the character, but that's how I always viewed her growing up, and how I kinda wanted to portray her in this image.

Now I need to run through Super Metroid again.

I'm by no means against sensual depictions of women, hell I'm a big fan of um! But I'm with you as far as Samus goes. Nice to see her in true ass kicking form and not depicted as a pin-up for once.

Well in the prologue of Super Metroid looking at her one eye denotes a stoic personality. Look at Cloud Strife or Jon Snow I think of Samus more like them than a "hardass". Just my opinion. At least I don't think of her as a someone who monologues to hell and back and is stuck in a flashback memory daze when confronted by remnants of her past in Other M.

I'm glad you share the same view as I have of samas basically someone who is tough and toes the line between bringing those to justice (for a price of course) and being a full vengeful adult who has all things considered some of the most traumatic experiences a fictional child can go through.

And in the background a subtle depiction of ridley? Brilliant!

I enjoy it, when people share the same way of how to see Samus as I do. I am also not any happy with the details being shown of her in the recent games. Especially Other M - it was a good game, no question, but there the character was double screwed. 1) She usually was that whiny little kid, that really didn't suit the badass interstellar bounty hunter. Not at all. 2) She actually served in military? Like how, with a suit nobody else ever had? That story about her being raised by the Chozo sounds a lot more believable. I do like Other M, but everything being shown and said about Samus in that game totally doesn't make me happy.

Your picture here just hits it. As I said on your other picture, even though you kept her given design with the hair and the like, it's awesome how you didn't show her as that stupid sexy bitch, known as Zero Suit Samus. I would only say, she looks a little too angry for my taste. I imagine Samus as a very calm and controlled person, who'd usually wear something like a poker face. But I'd be fully happy with this scene, as if it's her success over a heavy enemy and her eyes saying "that's what you get for messing around".

Great picture, thank you. Once again, my respect! You as the art director for a Metroid movie. If that'd come, I would have never been less patient to see the result before.

As a giant fan of Samus myself, I just had to put my two cents to a fellow fan
I too found it hard she served in the military, but I like to think she had no choice.
Here's why : when the Chozo suddenly left, they let no explanation for why, nor anymore tips of how to atteign to the Varia suit, and even less it's antigravity function.
Let's imagine Samus left with her power suit. It's basic and can barely function at the height it's expected. As a whiny kid growing up, she might just get angry and say to Old Bird (her mentor) to show her. But as a kind of Yoda, he would comment that she needs to control her anger, acquire discipline and concentrate. "Little steps, baby chicken". Β
And suddenly, Old Bird and (most of) the others dissapear.
"Great! Now how am I going to acquire the Varia threshold?!" she would mumble. Β  "No way am I going to let spooky MotherBrain nanny tell ME what to do." Β Β Thus this led her toΒ the military.
She then chooses to hide the fact that she has technology that can surpass the Federation's suits until that moment Ian Malkovich was in trouble. She implied she could help him (Chozo DNA augmented and all), but because Adam didn't know about the higher suit's functionnality, saying she lacks something (and she yet may had), he didn't give her the permission.
And that's why she left; Adam didn't have faith in her, and thus she could not see herself trusting her with the secret of her Chozo legacy... until probably hours before her leaving she managed to acquire the Varia's full power in front of him and close friends, then leave with an angry gaze, as if "Well, I don't need your sh*t anymore... So I guess I'll be on my way."
Last but not least, MotherBrain, one of the Chozo's greatest invention (along with Samus' suit and the Metroid), did suggest that they left of fear of a great danger, and calculated that it was the Federation itself that would become this danger, pining Samus against her own kin. This might pull into the equation further on.
Again, I might be implying and turning to false conclusion, but according to what I gathered so far, I like to think it went something like that.
Just my view here. Β

That sounds like a cool story. And believable. If Other M was meant to play out like that, Samus' nasty personality there would have a reason. But since it seems like that story takes place after she already finished several of her badass missions and also already worked with the full potential of her suit, the Story and character "development" of Other M doesn't make any sense. So I will simply take your story here and take it for granted in the Metroid timeline, it makes all sense, as if Other M was before all other existing games. Then it makes also sense, that she's working with the Federation in Prime 3. Together with the attitude you gave her there, that pretty much sounds like the right development of Samus. Caring less for social interaction and going for a loner's business.

I see, why would we need Nintendo, if Samus' story gets subtiley told by the fandom - a story, that's enjoyable. Another element that I really don't like, is that they gave her the ability to simply generate the suit. That's so lame, only made for them to make it so simple to not needing to care about the complexity of actually taking the suit on and off. But I see the suit as classic massive technological armor, pretty much like Iron Man. If a movie would be made, I would be the right man for the technological design of everything, because I enjoy to think of how something actually works. My creations are damned awesome but still believable, what her generating the suit is not.

I am glad that you thought it makes sense. Samus' story is so complex and diverse that it's quite a hassle to make sense of all of it. It's also quite a tragic one.
Thought I have to remind you, in Other M, there are flashbacks galore.
When you writeΒ Β "I will simply take your story here and take it for granted in the Metroid timeline, it makes all sense, as if Other M was before all other existing games.", according to a very detailled YouTube video (I forget which one), Other M is the second to last story of Samus Aran's adventures -- right before Fusion which I dislike completely. But the flashbacks we get throughout are from before Zero Mission which takes place right before the Prime trilogy.Β But I agree with you that Other M has problems.
There is also a manga that, for the first half, is very well made. It explain somewhat the importance of the morphing ball -- it's not just about reaching hard to get places but also about interfacing just like MotherBrain does. You can find it at mangafox.
Peace out and have a nice day!
