Description Fizz  and Mark Cox out for a winter hunt as part of the SVI Equi-Canine 2015  show! Mark has really caught the hunting bug and can never wait to get Fizz out to another show!

I decided to try a traditional painting for a change, and it was definitely a fun break from digital (which I've been feeling a little stuck with lately). This is acrylics on an A4 size canvas panel.
Feedback and critiques are always appreciated.

Thank you! As far as traditional mediums go, acrylics are probably my favourite - they're quite forgiving and you can go back in and fix/change things quite a bit. I'm too spoiled by digital to be able to work with watercolours or coloured pencils where once you make the mark it's basically made forever!

My pleasure!
Oh man acrylics, I never got along with them, at least not on paper. They work great for modifying horse models, which is what I use them for mainly. Oils must be my most hated medium of all and watercolors my favorites.

I love the details you managed to achieve, like the little snowflakes!

Thank you so much! Those little details are always the most fun part of the painting for me

This is so refreshing! I'm glad you took the opportunity to do this traditionally!
You did the background so nicely! There is a wonderful amount of texture on here. Plus the shading looks wonderful!
Best Wishes in the show! ♥

Thank you! I should remember to do traditional more often, it's fun to switch it up.
I think they ended up being the only ones in this class of the show, so I'm not sure there's much to how they do in the show

Thank you I don't do much to keep track of the time, but I would estimate it took about 4-5 hours. Really quite a quick one

I'm with oxpecker, well done with the acrylics

I really like the ground -- the way the brown specks show through the snow in the near foreground and then further back by the tree, with the swooping blue shadows in between. And I like how strongly the shape of the saddle shows against Mark's leg and the saddle pad and Fizz's coat, and the shape of the loop of rein next to it.

After those limited palette exercises a lot of people were doing I'm finding it kinda fun to look at the painting in that way (As in, telling your eyes, show me all the warm blues--! And then seeing all the warms in the mountains and clouds and Fizz's coat. Show me all the cool blues--! And seeing the cools in the sky and Fizz's shoulder and some of the shadows on the ground. Etc etc.)

Oh, thank you! It's so wonderful to hear that you anticipate seeing my artwork!
I agree that the limited palette exercises are really good for training the eye to see colour differently - I should go ahead and do another for more good training! Thanks for your thoughtful comment

Oh so lovely! Well done with the acrylics
My only complaint would be the photo reproduction, perhaps the details and whites would come out cleaner if you scanned it? I feel the image does not do the quality of your work justice.

Oh, you are absolutely right. I usually avoid scanning because my scanner often does funny things with colours, but for this one getting the whites really white was much more important - I think the scanned version looks much better. Thank you!
