"Every time you die, your grip on this world slips away. Every time you die, your friends forget you a little more. Your life will end here, in a world where no one remembers you..." -Asriel
From that, I have a theory: In his experimentation (developing the CORE, or investigating magic) Gaster absorbed a lot of Determination. When he died in the accident, he may have semi-returned, or struggled to come back to existence. Possibly dying, or falling back after each attempt. In his struggle, he erased himself from history, and exists in the other world.

"Ironic, isn't it? The more I struggled to return to the reality I knew, the farther I fell from it."

And I have this OC idea for his estranged father. When Gaster was erased, nearly everyone forgot about him by extension. What little he remembers about him, is that he did have a son at some point, but can't even remember his name. He beats himself for being unable to recall.
