Awww I love rats. They have such cute weasel faces. I have my Eddie on my shoulder. He's probably 8 weeks, he's a broken mask. Brown spots on both sides split down the middle with white

I only have one now. My Eddie. I have a few pictures of my past rats but they have all been long gone. I actually had a number of cages. I had two for my girls Marchoro(both were guinea pig/rabbit cages) though one was a bit bigger. The other cage was a tall Super Pet for ferrets. Though since I only have one (I hope to change that) I just have my small single home cage. But as we all know, rats need friends. And they are like popcorn. You can 't have just two or four or eight.... yah. LOL

They can be. Though with breeders (who I'd rather go through then the chain stores like Petco and such) since they don't mill they're animals like the chain stores do. Up until a few years ago petco never separated they're male or female mice or rats. Until the ASPCA (bless them) complained and enough people did. If a child went home with a female rat, it usually was pregnant, and the store would take the babies, although wouldn't seperate them. Now they wouldn't separate them either. I prefer breeders or local stores, since they tend to be a bit, well, kinder. But your right rats are such wonderful little creatures.

^^ Yea, we got little Sophie from petco... she's way too young to be sold, but she seemed friendly, and to give one a good home seemed good idea. Our first rat was from petsmart, a female accidentally got into their shipment (the petsmart nearby only sold males) and got pregnant,so we adopted one of the daughters. I think Wolfe is from a breeder, the store we got him from orders them from a local "guy".... and I've seen some pretty rare ones... well, rare as in haven't seen many agoutis or russian blues...american blues? Well, some very nice ones.
They're so sweet and smart. ^.^

There are many different varieties. I use to know quite a few from the top of my head. I love my rats, and they are bout the only pets I can have now (due to time and not being home much) though I'd love to have a cat.

Lol, I love cats too, but i get asthma from them. T_T Rats are so loving... didn't think they would be... but they live for two years... and have so many health problems. T_T
Btw, you're irish? That's sooo awesome... do you have an accent?? I LOVE irish accents!!! xD

They can live longer then 2 years sweetie. Though most of them live about 2 and a half. They have a life span of 3 to 5, depending on how not so inbred they are. Males I've heard have a tendancy to live longer then the females but I could be wrong.
Heh
No I'm half irish, I love scottish accents myself. Make me all go into mush. I just like running around the house screaming that

Lol. xD That's cute. I guess we all have our cue quotes -girls anyway. Mine is "feed me." Mom doesn't like that one much. One more question... do your rats ever bite your toes when you have socks on? Mine bite like they're trying to tear my toes off... but only with socks on. x___X

No. But I've had some in the past that would try to chew off the new skin my dad put on his thumb to seal the cracks. They know stuff like that isn't natural and want to get it off the skin. My rat Zoe waaaaay way back when, use to knot peoples hair with her fingers. Litterally. She'd tie it in knots

Huh... they always try to bite my feet, so scary!!! T_T And my Wolfe loves to steal papers -he took the entire manual for setting up my bike when my dad came over. And now he sneaks onto the table and steals salt water taffy from the candy bowl. Faaaat children.

Lol, now that's cute! xD cats like donuts?? .-.
My cockatiels used to...still do...(I moved this past september from Hawaii to California...couldn't take them with me...?) try to steal food from your mouth when you're eating something. They see yourmouth moving and figure if you'd bother eating it, it must be better than seeds. They also love warm soup... dunno, guess my rats love soup too... sneaky little fuzzies on the table stealing things.
Btw... little Sophie just went to rat heaven a few days ago...one night she was suddenly puffy and just sitting out in the open -which she never does 'cause she's so skiddish. I thought she might be choking, but she was just panting, and it said they'd be gagging, so I figured that wasn't it. So I thought maybe she ate a thumb tack since she used to somehow climb into the closed drawer on the t.v. stand, but I don't know. She sneezed a little blood which wolfe has done for a while, but stopped after he got his antibiotics. So I gave her a little of the leftover medicine, and a few hours later she was dead...
Do you know what happened maybe?

Amberwood In reply to PokeShoppe [2007-12-08 16:05:29 +0000 UTC]
It possible that she ate a tack but I doubt it. Did she have a cough prior? Some sneezing? Thats the reason mine tend to pass away from a cold that doesn't want to leave. I don't have any now, even my little boy passed away. I'm actually done with them for a while. I also had a cat pass away too. My Pierre was 16. It's hard when they go up on the rainbow road. However if Sophie was gagging, panting with her mouth open to breath, she probably couldn't breath through her nose. They'll do that too.

Sorry about you losing your babies...
That's the worse thing. But the thing is, she was healthy until a few hours before she died, and she was just a little short of breath, and cuddling up in my silk scarves, so she wasn't cold or anything, since silk isn't very warm. But... I dunno. Yea, my fav. kitty when I was a little girl ran away to die. He was an outdoors cat. We used to leave him cooked fish every night at exactly 8:00 and I'd wait for him to show up. One day he didn't come, and I still look for him every time I go walking around the house. But well, they're all happy together now. ^^ But yea, rats are so loving, you get so attached to them, and they die so quickly...

Its really too bad that rat's lives are so short due to all the inbreeding that has been done. Thats why they contract cancer so easily, same with pure bred animals. I use to have a cat named Oreo, he was an outdoors cat though always came home. He was awesome, I swear he was human in a past life cause he acted so human. I miss that cat to pieces. He went missing one day too, though I feared he got killed by a fox, and if that was the case I know the fox probably had a good war wound cause the Orb's was such a street smart cat.
