There's definitely a very spooky feel to this piece.
I can also see this being scary in a very basic, instinctual way. I can imagine being alone in the middle of a Cretaceous meadow and suddenly seeing this silhouetted against the dark sky, then disappearing into the shadows again before you have a chance to figure out exactly what it was.

The whole kerfuffle over feathered dinosaurs has to be rooted in Western cultural perceptions that reptiles are collectively more menacing or villainous in appearance than birds. When you hear the word "bird", the first images that come to your mind are tiny songbirds, poultry, or parrots instead of anything as dangerous as a crocodile, cobra, anaconda, or Komodo dragon. On the other hand, turtles may be the only reptiles still around that don't scare or repulse people. No wonder the Western public prefers a reptilian aesthetic to their predatory theropods.

Clearly not enough people have had run-ins with swans or geese. Those things are Satan's living kazoos.
