Description So I've been working on this for a couple days...at first I just wanted to do a picture with a castle in some clouds, but being the horse lover that I am, I figured no picture would be complete without a couple horses
So, many hours later...here it is! I think it's pretty good (except the white horses mane = bleh), but I am definitely open to comments! So let me know what you think!

EDIT 8/11/10: So I actually REALLY fixed the horse hair! And the wings a bit. I think it looks lots better

EDIT 7/20/09: I fixed the horse manes/tails a little bit...the old white horse mane/tail was driving me crazy, it looked so fake...Still not 100% happy, but I think this is an improvement.

So, I thought I'd try my hand at doing a small critique/comment.

First of all, I think it's a good concept and you pulled it off well. The elements merge well together, and nothing looks like it's just been slapped on for good measure. That's a +.
Your manes are all fine, but what could need some improvement are your tails. I suggest that you use a small brush, 1-3 px, and use all over the tail. Right now it's ending in larger clumps, and it doesn't look real; doing some smaller work over and ending it all in these small hairs will add detail and make it look more realistic.

And, as a whole, it feels like the picture is 75% done. It all merges, most colors are fitting together, nothing is really off but it doesn't feel really done either. I know, there's not much that *can* be done, only small over-all stuff, like trying tricks with Gaussian Blur and layer options and such things. One easy way is to merge all visible, then make a copy and use Gaussian blur with the strength 2 on it, and then fiddle with things like opacity, overlay, desaturation etc. It doesn't do too much visible but is good for tying things together and making the colors fit even more.

But like I said in the start of the comment; good work. Keep it up.

Thank you I appreciate the in depth comment. This was one of my first to mid manipulations, and my first where I used wings. Manes and tails have always posed problems for me, but part of it is because I do all my work completely with a mouse. I don't own or have a tablet, so to make my strokes steadier I used to use a larger brush size.

I have been doing more blur on the manes in my later works, layering over and such. I don't know if you looked at any or can tell, but I hope it's an improvement on my first pieces!

Again, thanks for the comment!

I know the pain of working with a mouse - I do so, too.

No, I didn't go through the rest of your gallery, but I'm thinking of doing so and seeing how your work has improved, hehe.

And no problem. Looking at others works give me inspiration, and looking for things they can improve on points things out to me, too.

Very true...plus I think it's way easier to point out flaws in other peoples work than in your own...I always ask for a second opinion on important stuff

Yeah, that's true. I often get "blind" when working on my pictures, because I dislike taking breaks and finishing them another day etc. So then I tend to miss smaller things just because I've stared at it for so long haha
